I suppose they broadly mean the same thing but personally I think that a loan would be when the owner rarely rides or sees the horse whereas a share, they both see/ride the horse about the same.
Having a horse on loan means you are taking on the horse as if you're buying it - you are responsible for everything and all costs. A sharer shares the horse - sharing some of the costs (often a weekly fee) and getting to ride a set number of days a week. Sharing is less expensive and less commitment..
Its not that I am thinking of putting mine on loan, I was just wondering what the difference would be. Thanks everyone! Yes I see what everyone means by that you would take the horse on as if it was your own but what if only part loaning? Is that essentially the same as sharing?
Basically what Honey said. With a loan you are pretty much buying the horse - you have to pay all costs for livery/shoeing etc. but you don't actually pay for the horse initially, and usually loans are arranged beforehand for a certain number of years, and after that the horse has to go back to the original owner. Sharing is just where you go and ride a horse a few times a week and split costs/chores/rides between you and the other sharer, so much less commitment.
As far as I know, part loaning is the same as a share, just another term to confuse us
part loan is the same as a share - I have known people describe share as no money (but jobs included) and part loan as more "serious" usually with contribution and contract
My last horse I loaned, I had full financial responsibility for her although her owner did help out with her huge vet bill. I made all the day to day decisions but I called or texted him every month or so and if we were moving to a new yard he always came up to approve it. When she had to be put to sleep we were in very close contact.
I share my new horse, he is my best friends but I will be helping look after him and her pony plus chipping in with hay cost and feed but it's a very easy going arrangement as we know each other so well xx
I think they mean slightly different things to different people. Imo loaners have a bit more responsibility. I know 2 people who 'share' and they don't pay anything.
