What is the easiest way to make the rug neck smaller

The pony's rug is too big in the neck I love the fit elsewhere but it rides back and digs into her wither. My thoughts were have darts put in the neck or thread cord through the neck binding Think the cord might be the easiest as I dont have an industrial sewing machine I rather doubt my normal one will be up to the challenge and handsewing would likely be quickly undone. Alternatively is there a 4ft9 rug that doesnt have a huge neck as all the ones I have tried on her are much the same she is still very fat so hoping the winter will make her neck smaller which will of course make matters worse. The rug is only for occassional use the night before a show or a couple of days after a bath

Look for rugs that have very adjustable front fastenings - like those from Maxima Equestrian, for example. The straps have buckle fastenings one end, with trigger clips the other, with a choice of two different rings to clip too. This allows you to tighten the area around the neck and chest right up to get a snug fit. You don't say whether the rug concerned is stable or turnout. I'd be wary of making alterations to a turnout rug in case it affects the waterproofing.

I put small pleats rather than darts in the neckline, stitching only on the binding. Works extremely well.
Not an easy job without an industrial machine but if your machine handles denim (check in the manual for set up) you may be able to put a couple of lines in.

This but I use stitched tucks with other rugs too. It's surprising how much the fit alters with just an inch taken from each side as Catkin says. I just use mane thread and a decent needle, takes only minutes to do each side. Put your first dart 15 inches below the withers and do the same both sides. Always show the tuck on the outside so it doesn't rub and only sew the bindings not the actual rug. You can always add another dart a few inches below that if you need to but remember the tucks will make the front of the rug rise so you need to make sure the fastenings don't dig into the chest or neck.
