When people talk about a saddle having a 'narrow twist' ( I think this only applies to dressage saddles) what do they mean? and what does this look like?
I've always known the twist as the narrowest bit of the seat. A narrow twist would suit a narrow hipped rider (I prefer my saddles with a narrow twist - I'm a size 6/8) while a wider twist might make a narrow hipped rider feel like they were being stretched apart.
Ahh I see. Interesting! Someone told me that narrow twist saddles suit people who have a tilted pelvis and therefore a curve in the back, whereas a normal (?) saddle would be for people who are completly straight in the back, like most men, if that makes sense.I think this may make sense as I once rode in a saddle that was defined as a narrow twist saddle and I found it very comfortable, more so than other saddles. As Ive got a very curved back I was therefore trying to suss out which models of saddles would be better for me.But I cant think what it was about that saddle I tried that made it a narrow twist? Looked the same to me to most other saddles except that it had a 'deep' seat.
It is the width of a saddle, some saddles make all horses feel 'fat and wide" even if they are not.
I much prefer a narrow twist as I think its more comfortable for the human shape (ie. we are not all made to be legs akimbo!)
The wow saddles also add another complex into the mix, they have a shape that you can grip with the hollows of the tops of your thighs. Which is great but then you feel unsafe in saddles that don't have this!!!
I think the consensus is women tend to prefer a narrow twist. Since saddles have traditionally be designed with male anatomy as "normal" this is seen as being a modification.
Like everything in saddles, though, there really isn't a standard. And the twist doesn't always dictate seat width, which many women actually prefer wider than "normal".
