Ah, well: BHS........the Nervous Nellys of the horse world.

I was speaking to a BHS main person for Scotland the other day when an owner brought her to the yard to watch the horses. Not sure she overly approved of much ... and defintely not when she asked about clipping! Who knew I was supposed to have someone hold the horse for me at all times!?! And that's before we got to the hat and gloves ...

They've changed their tune then! When I did my stage 2 many years ago we were asked during the clipping section what else might be useful and, having exhausted all other possible answers I slightly flippantly said "An assistant". The examiner laughed and said "Yes, well we'd all like that, but they're often not available so we just have to manage. "

No it's gold standard for rescues now. Not nervous being kicked in the head and had to have a plate put in wouldn't do it any other way.
I think I'll just soldier on without all the "gold" stuff thank you. I've been kicked in the face; no hat's going to help with that (also not nervous, and no hat either).

I remember getting properly roasted a while back for suggesting that cats should be kept indoors/contained (on the basis that if they were kept responsibIy then the bloody things wouldn't get run over, shot at, etc or crap in other people's gardens and decimate wildlife) I was royally burned at the stake and you'd have thought I'd suggested offer newborn babies as a sacrifice to the Devil himself ?? Then I took it a step too far by suggesting people could use "catio" things to keep dear "Fluffy" contained bit still exercised ?? I know, so cruel ??

Boy, did I run into a crazy one tonight or not!

On a local handmade decoration sales/crafts group, somebody posted an ad for Christmas wreaths, stating that they are decorated with "numerous beautiful Christian symbols". The pics showed a plain wreath with a couple of pinecones and a red bow - simple as can be.

Being a bit nerdy about symbols, I made the mistake to ask what symbols/decoration do they offer, as the photos had almost none, to which the person answered that the wreath "is a circle, and circles mean infinity". I then mentioned that they specifically promise "numerous symbols" in their ad, and went along on my merry way, thinking nothing of this encounter.

Hours later I logged back into FB and my notifications had blown up! There were more than 50 comments and angry reactions, from which I learned that I'm a big ol' meanie that aims to destroy small businesses, understands nothing of the complex art of wreaths and should not even comment if I'm not a pro wreathmaker myself. ? And that's not mentioning the nasty bits. Turned off notifications for that post and expect myself to be banned from the group by morning. ? People are crazy!

I can understand the gloves thing. I have normal hands which are not covered in callouses or anything else hence I am susceptible to rope burns. When going out sailing we were always expected to wear gloves as not only were our hands protected from said burns but they improve the ability to hold on tight, hence I routinely now wear gloves when with my horses in all but the hottest weather. No big deal.

However holding on tight can have its drawbacks, as I found out, when one of mine pulled back swiftly and the clip between headcollar and lead snapped and caught me full on in the neck! I still have the scar.

I'd say any of us who've clipped multiple, often not well known to us horses would say that having someone holding them, probably cold, bored, not tuned in to the person clipping or the horse, is about the most dangerous thing you can do ?
