my boy has a lump on his side, under where the saddle flap goes. He has had it about 6 weeks. I thought it was a bite, as he reacts quite badly to flies, and so didnt bother too much. It isnt bothering him, and is about the size of a big bite, maybe 5mm across. I had a closer look again today as it hasnt gone down any. It has no head or scabbiness to it, which makes me think maybe i was wrong and it isnt a bite.... the bizarre thing is, the hair over it is longer than the rest of his coat and that makes it look bigger. the lump itself is soft, and isnt seperate and mobile under the skin if that makes sense..

anyone got any ideas? thanks in advance...

Mr C has a lump just near his withers where the saddle sits - like you, I thought it was a bit but he's had it for about 6 weeks now. It's hard to the touch but doesn't bother him.

Going to get the vet to have a look at it this week when he's getting his booster - I'm worried that his microchip has moved (heard horror stories about this) or it was suggested that it may be a worm that has migrated??

Is he bothered with you touching it?

no, he's not fussed by it at all... sorry i havent got a piccy, it just looks like the kind og lumpy-bumpy you get with a bite..... but i thought it should have gone by now? And the hair is longer on it...

maybe some kind of super -fly bite?! Lol, il try and get a pic tomorrow.. i had a couple of very experienced friends look at it as well and they were baffled by the longer hair as well... maybe if it is a bite, it happened before all his winter coat was out (lost it late) and its stayed in on the bite?!?

if you can move it about under the skin it could be a fatty lump..usually a bit squigy and mobile under the skin

if its been there 6 weeks i doubt its a fly bite - id get the vet to fine needle aspirate it to double check - its probs nothing to worry about tho!

thanks

as i said- it isnt scabby, no head on it, and it isnt mobile under th skin... but the hair is really long on it!

Foreign body?
I'd be tempted to clip all the hair off it to get a really good look at it, but that's just me.
Could be a foreign body of some sort, stuck in / under the skin and setting up an inflammatory reaction.

My horse has a lot of similar lumps & hers are sarcoids. Advice has been leave well alone unless they cause a problem as sarcoids can respond to treatment by getting worse and what works for some won't for others. She had a couple when I bought her & the vet then thought they were scars. She has acquired a few more & now has about 20. They haven't caused any problems yet but I noticed a new one on her girth line today so am calling the vet for more advice tomorrow.
