Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Its like bumpy patch of skin on horses back leg. Its on one leg only and feels bumpy and hard to the touch. If you pick it there is red skin underneath but no puss etc. Horse is not lame and it is not painful to the touch, there is no heat or swelling. Its similar to mud fever but I dont think it is?
Im a bit gutted as little bugger is meant to be competing this weekend and it dosent look very nice!
(Vet is coming out tomorrow night to have a look but I was wondering if anyone had experienced something similar?!)

The dark flakes are bits of dead skin I think, maybe a bacterial infection or something?

Does he wear boots? Looks a bit like a bacterial infection from where they get sweaty. Good wash with some hibiscrub and smother it with sudocrem, should be gone in a day or two. I always keep a few pairs of boots on the go and wash them through everytime they are used then hang up to dry.
 
My pony get this ever year when she sheds her coat. It looks awful and the cost comes out in clumps and it looks sore underneath but she isnt bothered. The coat grows back quick if I pull the loose hair out.

I have no idea what it is. All I do is wash her legs in tea tree shampoo and brush her legs well. Any hair that has lifted and come loose, I pull off. Then the coat comes back through as normal. She has it on her hind legs only.

Would love to know what it is too!
 
He never wears boots and is 24/7 at the moment. He has never had it before although he has had mud fever.

I have hibiscrubbed and sudocremed it and am planning on doing the same tomorrow.

SmartieBean09 does your ponies skin go all scaly/bumpy as well. I must admit I did have a pick to see what happens and the hair comes away easily but I didnt pick the scabby bits incase I made it worse.


I wonder what caused it then and how I can prevent it?!
 
When my horse had a skin problem, the vet gave me an anti biotic skin cream. They may help you?

It is. Its as if the hair is dead on top. It goes all lumpy and you can literally grab pieces and they come away.

I am going to give her a good bath tomorrow and Tea tree her legs so I will take some before and after pics so you can my mares too.

She has had it every summer for the 8 years I have owned her. It does look awful but she really isnt bothered by it. Am going to start feeding her micronised linseed this winter. Will be interesting to see if this helps coming into next summer.
 
Looks a bit like winter leg syndrome to me.

My grey horse has the odd patch on his white legs at the moment too. I wouldnt wash, personally. Just brush the area clean, let the skin dry up and get the old winter hair off. With a good dose of dry weather it should clear up pretty quickly. I would also not boot as the moisture produced will not help.
 
My old Arab has exactly the same thing on his white hinds.

It's been there for years, whether turned out or not.
 
It is to do with sunburn from the plants in her field, its called something like photosynthesis or something similiar. bit like mud fever but not. Sorry to be so vague.

Close but no coconut :) It is called photosensitivity

OP does you horses paddock have a lot of buttercups? They are a common cause of the condition :)

If you type photosensitivity into the search box on this website you will find lots of other threads about the condition
