It wasn't there yesterday and have been riding all week wit no probs. Due to it being really warm he has been out with no rug on today so am wondering if it could be a sting or if he has rolled on something ?

I would say it's a reaction to a bite/sting. My chap got eaten alive over the summer and had similar 'swellings' at various places on his body. I put arnica gel on them and they did go, but he was lathered in fly spray and wore a fly sheet after that.

\thanks thats what I was thinking he didn't mind me grooming it. He has gone all summmer and not had one sting ?? but I came running out of the field the other nite cos ther was one of those buzzing dragon fly things that stick to you ????

Ewwwww!! It's highly likely that he was stung/bitten then......we're right by a river so get flies everywhere, they're viscious little buggers too!
