Has anyone any idea of what this might be? Has come up in the last few months on his inside near hind, but does change in size depending on workload.. Not lame, No real heat. It seems like a solid fluid lump, could he have bashed it in the field? Got vets wednesday so will have him checked then.
Sorry about size of picture!

Not 100% sure but is it Bog Spavin? I think they are fluid filled lumps but I dont think they are harmful. Would need to look on net to be sure.

Out of interest, what are the regular little marks on front legs? Could it be connected? Anyway, livery horse at our yard had an accident in a friend's trailer (partition collapsed and got wedged under mare's legs) and got a nasty knock in just about that spot. Vet's been out a couple of times as it isn't going down. They say it's minor damage to the outer surface of the bone and will take forever to go down. In the meantime, the horse is totally sound and her usual feisty self.

I would be inclined to say splint but is very big?
Forelegs has he been pin fired? Though never seen it on the shins usually just sides & back?

I take it your horse is an ex-racer? I ask as it's mainly ex-racers from a certain era that are pin fired (dots on the front of legs).

If it's soft and painless, then it does sound like some kind of bursal enlargement. However, I am confused as they are usually associated with a joint. You'd kinda expect a lump in this area to be either a splint and therefore hard or caused by a healing wound and therefore a break in the skin. Unless it's possibly and abscess - granted it's an odd area, but it could be a reaction to a bite? Though you would think that would be painful.

Sorry, really not much help at all am I

Its too low for bog spavin - that would be at the front of the hock in the joint. Its too high for a windgall, thats on the fetlock.

Perhaps he is kicking the inside of his leg with the opposite hind leg, Does it occur only on canterwork in the school or circle work as opposed to straight lines work , like hacking ?
Must be giving it quite a whack if thats the cause though.

Also is he shod behind? because if he is I would think he would cut himself with shoes on .

As SN says, but one of my mares has terrible windgalls in the usual places but she also has a soft swelling on her pastern (front leg) which is also a bursal enlargement - just a really odd place to have one! Which also comes up and down depending on whether she is in or out, exercise etc.

If your horse has kicked himself, bashed it while rolling etc, its surprising how long it takes to completely heal.

But there is a joint in the pastern - where the long and short pastern bones meet.

Is very probable he has bashed it in field, he is a bit clumsy and does play alot! As my daughter said it causes him no problems, is just unsightly! He is a typical scarred tb!

well my first reaction would have been splint forming (still in soft stage)

mums horse has one on the back leg, similar position but obviously small and bony like a normal splint.

My first thought was the same, but surely in the formative stages there would be pain? Therefore I discounted it. TBH if it were my own horse and the skin was not broken, I'd prob use DMSO on it - I would consult my vet!!

well I can think of 2 which I think didnt go lame at all, one was a 3yo, the other was 6 or 7. my own has a very small one that wasn't there when vetted, was there a few months later and I completely missed its formation! oops

BUT my reservation on this is if this is what the vet suspected they would have said so think it is prob something else as tend to trust vets judgement rather than mine !

wouldn't mind an update for interests sake OP when vet has been again.
