Has anyone ever seen something like this before?? I cannot find anything even remotely similar, and I am no longer convinced it is Onchocersiasis cervicalus. Not itchy, not weepy or oozy. It looks and feels like an external sorta flaky scar/scab. Shows up in the spring and peaks in the summer, seems to disappear in the fall though it may be covered by hair. Last year responded to ivermectin/praziquantel as recommended for O. cervicalus but ineffective this year. I want to get a biopsy done but would like an idea of what it even might be. They seem to be gone now with his winter coat coming in, but I know they'll be back in the spring. Does not respond to anti-fungal treatment and doesn't bother him in any way. My horse is 17 years old and these have been appearing since 2011 when he had a laminitic attack. He's in a herd and no other horses have this. He's in a paddock with no access to any possible plant allergens, though he was at a different farm for a short amount of time during his laminitic attack where he was in a pasture.
I am completely lost. I intend to do a biopsy in the spring when they are more visible.
