Following the clearing of an attic in a very old farmhouse this was found, along with other heavy horse tack. The noseband (if it is a noseband) is fixed and not wide enough for a heavy breed. I have asked the same question on some heavy horse social media too. Thoughts so far is a muzzle, but there is no bottom in the chain, maybe a anti bite device for a serving stallion and maybe a deterrent to stop the working horse snacking on the crop he is working in.252454954_1287941964965937_1500828458647024133_n.jpg

If it's too small for a heavy horse would it fit a heavy horse foal? might work to stop it from suckling but still be able to graze.

Maybe it goes round the leg of a heavy horse? Possibly to make them step higher, or know from the clanking where that leg was being positioned for the plough? Just guessing here :D

I’ve seen something similar used for slowing down the speed that potatoes or swedes come out of the harvesting machine they were being fed through?

You may well be right, the same has been suggested on the heavy horse forum. Just shows you should never assume. I assumed it was horse related because of other items found in the attic which are working horse kit.

Oh sorry I should have said, the one I saw was on a horse drawn bit of machinery! A lot of early tractor attachments went backwards and forwards between horses and machines, so it could easily be horse related.

Also if you’ve got any pics of the horse stuff, I’d love to see it! I have a very small collection of heavy horse stuff and adore looking at other people’s.

Is it the thing that keeps potatoes straight to go into a bag off the roller conveyor thingy .

That is the thought on the Shire Horse Past and Present Forum where there are some older farmers commenting. I am so pleased to have found out what it is, I will try to clean it up.

With age comes wisdom ! along with pain, exhaustion, frustration and the need to go to bed early I find ! Along with a very tall mounting block to get on and off your horse, together with the need to take paracetamol before and after riding.

I have had the very tall mounting block for a while, and now have to contemplate the getting off again bit for a while before actually doing it ?

Don't worry, there are a few of us on here ! I haven't ridden since May as my pocket rocket cob has been on a self destruction mission for a very long time. I am hoping the vets will let me start on her during the Christmas holidays. If they do I will need to start loading the pain relief now ! I will then need most of January off work to get over it.
