My ex racehorse fractured his pelvis when racing in 2007 after some time off he was put back to work but only run two more times before being finished. He spent the next two years being passed from pillow to post before ending up at the TB rehabilitation centre. From there I found him and tuck him home in 2006. At first everything was good but a few months later on my way home after a ride he collapsed. I managed to get him up and walked him home the vet was called but by the time they arrived he was looking over his stable door none the worse. No one had a clue what was wrong with him bloods were taken and all came back clear the only clue anything had happened was that his balance was terrible for some reason. He spent a month on box rest and to this day we have no idea what happened. The vet’s were at a total loss so when he was strong enough I just brought him back into work and hoped for the best. We have never had any problems since but just recently he finds it very hard to work in the school and when I try and make him use himself properly he backs off and gets very upset. I’m sure all his problems have been as a result of his fractured pelvis he is now lame and does not like being brushed again for the second time the vets advise has been to put him down but I’m not having it their must be something I can do for him. I might be clutching at straws but I’m going to get a physio to look at him and try some supplements any suggestions I’m at a total loss with him and can’t face loosing him after all we have came through.

Ive just had my tb scanned for hock fusion.
Has he had a flexation test done by the vet.

My horse was really lame and couldnt work from behind in the school I thought it was his age to start with he was young then we thought he was lazy but had him checked out and he needed surgery. If it is arthritis you dont have to go with surgery you can have injections and treat with joint supplements.Ask your vet to check his hocks.Perhaps the pelvis problems have thrown the vet of looking for anything else.
Try newmarket joint supplement its the one the vets recommend .

I had the vet out to my horse when for no reason he went down while out hacking. Managed to get him up and home. When he got up he was o.k. but I still had the vet check him over. They did the flexion test and it wasn't bad. They said unless I had a x-rays done than they couldn't tell anymore. So we boxed him to the vets and left him there overnight. They did x-rays and scans. It showed he had a damaged sacrel joint. He did struggle to get up sometimes in the field and was told to retire him, whick I did. For two years he lived in retirement. But last year he found it harder and harder to get up(used to sit like a dog before he managed to get up). We altered our large garage which is attached to the stables because he was 17.1 and I couldn't let them break his legs to get him out of a stable door when the time came. Eventually one morning he couldn't get up the vet was called and he was PTS.

Ask the vet to x-ray his pelvis if that's where his problems are before you make any decision.

Let us know how you get on or any outcome I'd be very interested.

Thanks for that ill get my vet to look at his hocks im sure we have all been concentrating to much on his pelvis. And ill get onto that Newmarket joint supplement strange a friend was talking about that supplement before i'd never heard of it.

The cheapest place for supplement is www.vetuk.co.uk the small tub last s about 50 days .Let me know how you get on with vet.If it is his hocks you can pm me if you want any info re surgery my horse had it done a month ago.

Sorry about your horse it's got to be the most difficult decision to make. I hope we have a little longer with him yet im going to get a second opinion from a different vet. I love your quotes especially the one about tequila. Ill keep you up to date with our progress thanks agin.

Ill keep you posted thanks again. I'm new to the forum not sure why ive never been on befor it's so helpful talking to other horse people. My boyfriend falls asleep as soon as a say the word horse.

Ditto its a male thing.
The site is really useful for info thats how I found it .I was doing searches on all the injuries my horse kept getting hes a (3 legged)walking disaster area.

your horse must be related to mine he spends his life going from one problem to another. I could pull my hear out with him some times. I dont suppose yours is a TB by any chance!.

Mines a TB and he also has that well known 3 legged disease. Think he prefers 3 legs to 4!! Abcess, nail in sole, abcess then sliced his coronet then his fetlock. Injuries so close together vet put all the treatment on the same bill!!!
