I have a 12 year old Collie x Lab who has developed a small lump (bald patch) on her lower back. I have taken her to the vets and they don't know whats wrong - gave her a load of injections and said if it hadn't gone they wanted to put her to under GA to remove it but after googling I read that it could be arthritis and should be left alone. Have enclosed a couple of photos.

As she is an old dog, would a biopsy be the way to go? She is not insured btw (well, she is but we let her jabs lapse!)

Thanks in advance.

Has a skin scrape been examined under a lens or microscope? Is there an actual lump or just thickening?
Looks like a skin problem - fungal or bacterial most likely.
Clip away the surrounding hair & try topical treatment for a few days - do ask your vet but try to find one that isn't small animals only.

Difficult decision. Have you told your vet about the info on Google?? Is there an actual lump and if so, does it feel soft or hard and does it move or feel fixed? Have you changed her diet lately? Is there anything that has changed in her life lately that she could be having a reaction to? If the vet didn't know what it was, how did he know what injections to give?
