What is wrong with people, Livid

Horses are beautiful creatures andiI can imagine some dude collecting apples to spend a bit of time just enjoying being around one. As someone mentoned, this guy May just help you out one day and alert you to a problem...you catch more flies with honey than vinegar...you are overreacting, what if your horse got out near an apple tree and scoffed the lot? Your fencing isn't adequate if this is such a big eal to you...I suspect this dude just needed to be told sweetly, but mby your over reaction on here, god knows how you 'educated' him...just saying...

Losing my cob was heartbreaking as he was a rescue of sorts and I loved him beyond words.but he didnt have the best start. I can still just about believe it was just one of those things. Losing the yearling a couple of months after, in yet again mysterious circumstances nearly finished me! In 30yrs of owning horses I've never lost one before so to lose 2 in weird circumstances was horrific, especially as I knew they were being fed and didnt move them :(

Those of you who think it doesn't matter...would you still feel that way if you had lost 2 like FrankieCob?

Nobody said it didn't matter, and I'm really empathic towards Frankie...but like she said, she didn't move them knowing they were being fed, she learned a terrible lesson...if this fear (which frankies story is far from common) is what you are living with, get your fencing sorted now rather than in half a year?

Nobody said it 'didn't matter' and I'm sure we all feel bad that she learned a terrible lesson, but like its half a year until spring, why not get your fencing done now? Learn from frankies heartbreak, because unless you sit with your Ned 24 hours, you cant guarantee no apple rule.

What did they die from ?

No one knows. I didnt have them Pmed as they were insured for £200 just to get the vets fees, and PMing and claiming combined with disposal would have crippled me. The cob, just dropped over night. No signs of colic or distress. It was damp so we could see his hoof prints and he just dropped. He had a slightly distended abdomen on the afternoon but gut sounds were ok, he was eating etc so we didnt call a vet. He was dead by morning, just dropped in his tracks sometime in the early morning with a very distended gut. The yearling, who was actually a 2yr old now I work out the dates, lost a massive amount of weight almost over night. The vet came out several times and could find nothing other than limited movement in his gut, which he couldnt restart. We kept him going for a couple of weeks, but he got worse and we eventually called it a day. It might not have been stuff they were fed, but the thought it might have been absolutely haunts me and I have spent most of tonight in absolute hysterics

All I do know is that they were fed regularly, at least once a day. They both died/got sick on a Monday and on a Sunday well meaning locals would chuck over the Sunday dinner peelings :(

Frankie, you poor thing. I might be wrong by saying that bashing yourself over what ifs will not help anyone, but sharing your story can help the poster. I can see it from both sides...but I once caught a guy and his grandson throwing actual potatoes in a herds paddock. I explained (nicely) how dangerous it is, and called the owner when i got home, he said its something he always did?...them horses were a hardy bunch, so, yep potatoes didn't kill em.also my guy has stolen crisps before, he was fine. Please release yourself from maybe ifs...release yourself by knowing you loved them, and you learning from a bad experience.x

So horrible for you frankiecob, I don't get the replies re it doesn't hurt, it's nuts that random people think its ok to. feed a horse, would you be happy if a stranger fed your dog chocs through your garden gate?.. I have exactly the same issue and I've caught people with a bag loaded with carrots and apples, I say they are fat please don't feed them, please take note of the signs! They say oh they love them and I only gave them half, me having seen from across the field lob apples to them in numbers. My mare has gone hyper spooky of late and gained weight despite being on restricted grazing, I'm convinced some idiot is still feeding her.

I totally agree with the op and 100% join you in your livid rant, you tell the twits!

It drives me mad when people feed our horse but it doesn't surprise me. I once took a class of Infants to Chester Zoo, another school had a class of Juniors there at the same time. We stood watching the chimps who were behind an open-topped glass screen, just by a notice saying 'DO NOT FEED THE CHIMPS, they get a balanced diet which is enough for their needs' or words to that effect. The adult with the group of Juniors said 'oh I'm sure they like apples' and promptly threw one over the glass screen. If idiots will do that at the zoo, the're bound to feed easily accessible horses.

This! I cant believe people are reacting like this. The odd apple isnt going to do any harm and Im sure no one is feeding horses bags of apples every day.....

My horses regularly get treats fed by hand and none of them EVER bite Becuase they know they would not be allowed.

All horses are individuals, and certainly I have owned some who are fine to hand feed, and others who definitely would not. However, this video certainly shows the very clear potential dangers of well meaning but ultimately ignorant people who think it's OK to hand feed other people's ponies... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOBpBKiH0XE

Trouble is, it DOES hurt! It's not just one person feeding, it's more than likely many a day. Mine used to be on a main road with my school round the corner, kids going past would just feed the horses whatever. People were always driving up to feed them! It's just not on to feed other people's animals, be it horses, dogs, whatever.

I'd definately make the top line of wire electric and put up those bright yellow plastic signs which dangle of it warning people of this. I'd also put some signs up round the field telling people strictly to NOT feed the horses as they have serious medical conditions meaning they are on special diets (like laminitis - even if they dont, just lie). Hopefully that'll make them think twice. I've never had this happen to my horses, but luckily I live in a very rural area so we dont see many folk round here! Id go mental though if someone did this, even if someone stopped to stroke my horses I'd be out there asking them what they were doing...! You have to be suspicious of everyone these days.

Well, there are some very different views on here! so we all have our opinions, I have my reasons for worrying about my horses! and I may have made it sound like it was rude to the guys but I'm actually not good in agruments, so was actually polite about what I said, I am sure that the guys would get hold of me still if I needed them too!

but that's for this video, this is what im worried about, if a poor innocent child got bitten because their parents where to ignorant to read my sign! I wouldn't be so annoyed if I didn't have a sign, but I do!

I have the area fenced off with electric anyway, so the horses are safe in there! its impossible to put new posts in the ground at the moment! so it will be done as soon as the ground is softer! but they are safe with the electric at the moment!
