Hey all, Just wondering what you all find the best schooling surface to ride on?

I have a sand school but the sand in it is horrible to soft and deep!!! I want an alternative so what is all of your favourite surfaces?

We've just had an awful, deep, (wrong type of) sand and rubber surface replaced with the (right type of) sand and combi ride and it's Fantastic!

i LOVE riding on rubbing chippings, its almost like they give the horse a spin and if you all on them you can just pick them out of your jumper, unlike sand is sticks!! also doesnt stick to horses legs :D

yes Ali this is what i think mine is though I have no rubber, the sand is horrible did you complain about it to the people who supplied it or just replace it? and how did you go about replacing it? did you have to dig it all up yourself?

Cushion Track surface, they have it at one of the local EC's and i absollutely love it!!!!!!! its amazing, even if its been rained on quite a lot :)

hahaha i thought you meant school as in primary/secondry school.

I was thinking mmm probably grass, as i remember falling over and cutting myself on concrete/gravel when i tripped over a ball!!! :o:p

I think i need an early night!!!

The livery yard I used to be on had andrews bowen in both indoor arena and outdoor, really nice surface, although could've done with topping up! My school has sand and rubber but is very deep! Not a big fan, plus when wet the sand gets everywhere! When we move, going to make sure I get a decent surface!

What colour is your sand? Mine is grey and very deep and my dad contemplated putting rubber in with it but I told him it wouldn't work it'll just get lost in all the deep soft sand. Mines very sticky when wet too. My neighbour had a lovely sand its a lot more compact but a soft dusting over the top i think its padstow sand and i really like it.

No mines the normal orange colour! I have no idea what type it is, sand's sand to me!! Not very nice though! I can't stand the deepness either! Was spoilt at previous yard I think!! Yeah the stickiness is so annoying, gets all in their boots, in stirrups, on my boots, chaps!!

A yard I briefly worked on had a nice surface. Can't remember what it was called. It was sand and a fluffy hair-like material. It was lovely but was quite high maintenance, in the summer it had to have the sprinklers on it a couple of times a day and had to be turned a lot, the "fluff" also had a habit of flying off

Fibresand I think.

One of our local Centres had that laid years ago and a lot of horses fell over in the corners when show jumping. Think it improved as time went on, or at least broke up a bit.

No it's not mine it's the yards! YO OH did the original school but he used the wrong type of sand. It used to be OKish but got deeper and deeper as time went on. YO added rubber a couple of years ago and if anything that made it worse. She used a proper arena specialist this time. They removed the sand and rubber but left the base intact, levelled it then added the sand and Combiride mix. Think it was about £9k for a 20 x 60 arena and some minor drain work elsewhere on the yard. It is fab now :).

I have wood fibre - it rides brilliantly, we have not had any drainage issues, and I love it, although I know that there are plenty of folks that don't think it as good as other surfaces!
