I like autumn because I like to go along picking fruit from the hedgerows as I ride. We have blackberries, wild apple trees, sloes, damsons, wild plums, hazelnuts and in a good year sweet chestnuts. I tested the damsons yesterday and they look like they'll be ready next week
... and If I catch the shooting party I sometimes manage to scrounge a free duck or pheasant to go with them.
A dry, clear spring for me! Just before the grass starts to grow for the first cut, so less chance of tractors, and we can get a good, straight gallop across our fields. Less bugs too, and you can get away with a light long-sleeved top!
Autumn is my favourite season of them all. A steady ride all alone on a cold clear morning, mist lying low in the valley, then home for hot tea and crumpets.
Snow is quite rare here (thankfully) but in 2011 we had two decent dumps. Of course everything grinds to a halt and we got told not to come into work (H and S issues). So I went riding ! It was a magic experience - the snow changed the landscape from ordinary to magical and I had several fabulous rides.
