What is your first aid product of choice?

Today my horse came in from her field with a small but sore looking gash on her leg. Washed it off then raided the first aid kit. I normally use Cut'n'heal on fresh wounds, but didn't have any. I will buy more of this tomorrow as I like it, but also tend to have at my disposal Sudocreme, Zinc and caster oil, and flamazine.

What is your favourite Open Wound product? What do you always reach for first? I tend to use CutNHeal on wounds, sudocreme on rubs or older wounds, and the Zinc cream on mudfever. The flamazine I got from the vet for a particular injury (horse skinned herself quite badly last year) but as it's badged as a Burn cream, I wasn't sure whether that suited fresh open wounds.

I tend to go for sudocrem for small cuts and grazes, for bigger cuts I like intrasite (sp?) gel.

I use flamazine as my vet gave it to me for mud fever and when I only used a little bit said 'keep it its great for cuts etc as it contains silver and antibiotics'. I also like green oils and we also had some special mud fever cream from the vets (they mix it themselves) and I used it with great success when my boy had an alergic reaction to fly bites and cut his neck and face from rubbing it (put on neck first to check wouldn't hurt!).

i'm a bit old fashioned in that for small cuts/grazes I like a puff of wound powder, if its something which may become infected I use Fucidin, its a human ointment but works wonders on animals too, i've used it on my dogs/horses and even the cat when he had an abcess on his leg )

Depending on what and where depends on what I choose but I usually always put sudocreme on top as I think its fab stuff!

My boy brushed the other day and cut open his fetlock, after washing it out I used an anti bacterial aresol spray which I use a fair bit- I like the fact it gets into all the nooks and crannies- I worry creams sometimes slip off, even though i put sudocreme over the top!

I like cut and seal too but didn't use it on this occasion as I wasn't sure if any dirt or bits got into the cut and was wary of sealing anything in.

If its deep but not enough for a vet I like the intrasite but ran out and cant remember were it came from- anyone know? Whats this dermagel like?

I wash it in either iodine or hibiscrub and apply betadine cream. When I am out of betadine, I use Savlon

Mesitran, I don't know if it's sold in the UK.

It can be compared to Vetramil but Mesitran is cheaper and easier to use.

Salt water and/or garlic water, we also keep teatree oil spray. We do have some greenoils gell to kee the muck out.

I tend to use flamazine its awesome. If I've run out tend to use the spray on or green oils.
But if you have flamazine use flamazine its great x

Betadine Ointment-and for small scratches then I'll use either Sudocrem or antiseptic cream.

flamazine is brilliant, but need to get it from the vet, so if I don't have any I use spray on iodine - really handy stuff. Also use sudocreme, MSM ointment and an array of other antibacterial creams!

Hydrogen peroxide and purple spray

We live in a dirty area for bacteria, so essential that everything is flushed out.

Use hydrogen peroxide on humans too, but not the purple spray!

I have no idea what it is called but I get it from my vet. Its a silver spray in an aerosol can (a bit like spray paint). It stays on for a good 7 days. Stops the flies getting to it and doesnt rub off. Wouldnt be without it.

Derma Gel is also fantastic and great for hair regrowth!!

Sudocream or Aloe on small grazes, Iodine solution wash and sudocream for cuts and superglue if a deep 'bleeding' injury once it has been wash out with Iodine solution and dried with a sterile dressing... before the vet arrives!

As a nurse (human) got my views on wound management. Powder is out of date except for the most minor of wounds as it is recognised that wounds heal best in a moist environment-hence another vote for intrasite gel. A large syringe and warm salt water for flushing out wounds-no cotton wool! Nappies and sanitary towels make great dressings if you don't mind the funny looks! I think that the use of hibiscrub is over-rated. It is used on the skin as a pre op prep and should be used with caution on broken skin. It caused the skin to break down over my hands and arms when I was using it to wash between patients. Iodine based products imo are safer. I use BR healing jelly for minor cuts and scrapes-bright yellow so easy to see where you have put it.

Also animalintex poultices for hoof abcesses.

I clean it with water & hibiscrub and then spray with the green spray from the vets. Its not cheap at around £9.00 a can but is excellent stuff. I cant remember what its called tho.

I usually bathe it with diluted hibiscrub and then use purple spray! If it is on their head, or a very small cut I use Aloe-Vera Roll on Gel.

Another vote for Derma gel. Fab stuff! I use Flamazine for mud fever, and would never be without a couple of packs of Animalintex.
