Having a horse slightly on the chubby side at the moment shes on strict diet and ridden daily, but I was wondering what your methods are of getting horses fit? Reading through a few posts i've seen some people have different methods, hill work, long periods of trotting, schooling etc and obviously it is best to combine them all, but just wanting to know your thoughts, opinions and tips?
 
I am certainly no expert but I have been reading about it lately and it has made a real difference to my mare in terms of her weight - if she does at least one faster ride (usually courtesy of my sharer who likes to live life in the fast lane) a week then it really makes a difference to her. I don't think there needs to be an exact science to it but if you hack perhaps try really lengthening your trots and canter. Adding a gallop in if you can (I don't gallop cause I am a wuss).

So, just build up. If you have a regular route and you think well, I usually walk this stretch, perhaps trot it and then perhaps canter your usual trot spot and continue to canter your canter stretch....

Changing to a faster ride even once a week will make a difference!
