I am a designer researching into developing the PERFECT jacket for riding and mucking about the yard. I would love to know your thoughts on what you think would be the perfect jacket for Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. Anything from pockets, hoods, zips, poppers, fabric, interactive layers, length, anything that you would love on a jacket/coat, that you cant currently get.
Many thanks

If it says waterproof, it should mean it. I have two great musto jackets, which they claim to be waterproof and they are not and never really have been.

It also needs to be washable. I now keep one old jacket for mucking out/handling the horses when they have wet dirty rugs.

My other jackets are just for general riding, I have one specifically for wet weather.

The Musto snug blouson but with the length of the Musto combination jacket with the fitted-ness of the Joules Eventer - that's my ideal coat. They're all warm, waterproof, windproof and horse proof. Oh and a phone sized pocket on the sleeve is really useful!

The pockets (or at least one) also needs to be waterproof......my poor phone has been drenched many times, and I remember my cigarettes (when I smoked) taking a battering!!

Def needs to be waterproof, and warm, and windproof. I find the ones with high necks very comfy. The hood should stay on your head too...nothing worse than a hood that flies off every time you face into the wind.

Would be a good idea to be able to zip a liner in and out, as I like to use the same coat all the time (where I leave treats/hoof pick/keys etc), but sometimes the temperature demands I change, which is annoying!!!

Some kind of reflective strips would be useful on the back too??

Would love to see your final design!!!!

Maybe with a zip out inside for the colder days. How about some thing reflective on it and maybe a whistle incase you fall off out riding

Must, must, must be waterproof. Am fed up buying "waterproof" coats and getting soaked!! Although coats with an elasticated waistband are nice when its dry they mean you get a wet bottom when its wet therefore I would like something that covered my bum when I was off the horse and that would ensure that my bum was covered when I was on the horse. I would like a coat with a high neck with a zip from bottom to top that doesn't let water down the back of your neck, totally waterproof with a warm inner lining, pockets inside and outside with a mobile phone pocket guarenteed not to let water in. And all to look very stylish in nice colours. I like navy blue a lot!!

I love blouson jackets for riding in, must be waterproof and windproof living in Cornwall!! I've just bought a Jack Murphy blouson and it's brilliant, can't fault it. Have a Joules coat for really really wet weather and that's a lovely coat too

It's good to have removable linings, I have a Musto combination (i think that's what it's called) and being able to change the lining - even wear it as a gillet alone, makes the coat work in pretty much all weathers.
I agree with phone pockets, what about speakers in the collar for dressage to music and your ipod! Or an attached hoof pick hmm might be getting a bit far fetched now!

If it is advertised as an all weather, waterproof jacket, it should probably have a hood, I have a lovely jacket which is smart, warm and extremely waterproof, designed for winter but no hood?!

Many thanks for all of your input. Love the idea of a hoof pick attachment, I have a very sensitive soled horse and always carry a little hoof pick with me in my pocket, so would be great having a holder/clip.

Anymore suggestions, I would love to hear them, even if they seem ridiculous!

I have always loved the Harry Hall jackets, but the last one I bought had velcro instead of poppers.
It gets caught on everything. I would definately prefer poppers.

Waterproof

Goes to mid tight, decent tailoring

Double vented at the back

Loads of pockets and strong zips

Hood that stays on.

Reflective stripes at the back.
