as title really: is there anything that you often see in an advert that imediately puts you right off, ie. first to see will buy etc??

a head shot or one with a xmas hat or some other get up
a photoshopped pic
ones that are based on the horse talking "hello my names ed and im looking for a new mummy"
 
Photo of horse wearing a rug, in the field, and taken in dull weather from about half a mile away!

The description "stunning" when the photo indicates the horse is anything but!

Reduced in price for quick sale...basically you over priced your horse, trying to be greedy or you think your horse is worth more than it is and you thought there was some muppet out there that would pay the asking price!!!

Over exaggerating how how high their horse can jump with a picture of a free schooling jump...a free schooling horse jumping is of course going to look fantastic going over a huge jump but it doesn't mean they can do it with a rider on board.

When they go in to loads of detail of the horses breeding...most of the time you have never heard of the sire or dam and people seem to forget that just because they have good bloodlines doesn't guarantee to make them the next Horse of the Year or Grand National Winner!!!

I appreciate there are exceptions to the above but they are few and far between!!

Exactly! I have a TB mare - grandsire Shirley Heights and Great Grandsire Mill Reef. Should have been a superstar. Could she race? No, that's why I've got her!

Yet my other one who is by a fairly unknown sire and out of even more unknown Dam was a superstar until he retired. Breeding doesn't mean anything to me....

Drives me mental. Surely you'd rather somebody was honest that it wasn't the horse for them than took something they weren't suited to for it to be quickly sold again for the sake of not 'wasting' your time.
Fair enough you do get people just out for a free ride, but I don't think there are that many of them out there...not everybody is that dishonest!
 
Photos showing the rider without a hat on (proper riding hat I mean). Just because a person may consider themselves experienced, and/or ride for a dealer or a professional yard, it doesn't mean they will never again fall off, and if they do there is no guarantee they won't hit their head. Why, why, why would anyone no matter how experienced get on a horse without a hat???? And what are they trying to depict in adverts with these pictures, are they trying to say the horse is safe? It actually puts me off as I consider them to be reckless and I don't care to buy a horse from someone who is reckless, thank you very much...oooh rant over, be calm, count to ten slowly...

Forgetting to put either age or height in ad (rang up about a horse with no height specified turns out it was 12hh)

Don't care about lengthly family tree (not being sold as broodmare/stud/comp horse) what has horse actually done?
'100% Bombproof' is there such a thing?

A picture of a horse that is for sale of the same breed but definitley not the same horse! This happened to me last year when i bought my Fell Pony colt. He was nice anyway but not the one on the advert!
 
Interested to read this as have just advertised one of mine (no longer for sale so I'm not jumping on the 'free advertising')

He's a 14.1hh New Forest who definitely isn't a novice ride. I said 'not novice ride' in his advert. If that's a pet hate what should I write instead?

Also if you don't want 'sold through no fault of his own' would you give any reason or just not say why?

I agree POA gets to me. Horses seem to vary in price so much (esp at the moment) I just wish people would say how much they want.

I'm hoping to be horse shopping early next year and I have what I would consider a reasonable amount of money to spend but would never phone up a POA for fear of being ridiculed!!

Don't be silly, making the numbers bigger doesn't make your claim any more true.

'Potential' in anything aged over about 5

Any mention of Parelli.

What's wrong with saying a horse is a warmblood if that's exactly what it is? You have a TB (or part TB) and presumably you would advertise it as such if you were selling. Ditto pink-papered - it only means that the horse's breeding is known and verifiable - what's wrong with that????
 
Anything that says 'potential' for example HOYS potential, great showing potential.

I agree about the timewaster thing. How can you be sure if this horse is or isn't for you without taking someones time up.
 
POA - wouldn't bother calling probably means out of my price range

Poor photos, I want an idea of the horse's conformation and build before I go and look.

Not a novice ride - say why for crying out loud.
Incorrect breed information - an ad for an irish draught that shows a coloured cob, is quite common.

Any reference to timewasters! Re advertised due to timewasters to me suggests that actually there is something wrong with the horse. Saying no timewasters suggests sellers that will be impatient and try to rush you into a sale - that makes me suspicious.

People who don't use the email seller function on Horsemart etc - it is much easier to drop a quick email asking if the horse is available and with a few questions than to make numerous phonecalls trying to catch the seller at a mutually convenient time. If the horse is still of interest after a quick email exchange then I'll arrange a convenient time to call.

I do like people who are happy to really talk about the horse and give you useful information over the phone, rather than the sort of "well what do you want to know" response. I spoke to a lady months ago about a horse and we must have been on the phone for nearly an hour while she told me about the horse, it was enough for me to know that going to see it would probably be a waste of both of our time. But she was sooo keen to help, saying that if we bought it she would help out with settling the horse and give us a couple of lessons on it etc etc

POA - what's the point??

"Needs confident rider" shortly followed by "100% bombproof, no vices, does not nap, bolt, spin etc" surely one statement contradicts the other.

"Not novice ride" - why, does it lack confidence /is it particularly forward going or is it just a fruit loop?

Horses under 6 years old being described as suitable for beginners, confidence giving, anyones ride :mad: I know there are exceptions to the rule but I wouldn't put a beginner on a 6 year old and leave them to it!
 
pretty much all that has been said above (in all posts!) but also i see horses advertised on several sites but with different amounts. you phone up about it and they try telling you the price is the highest price even though you rang up about the lowest priced ad which sometimes is put on after the highest!

also "ONO", i've offered £200 less on a horse before but got told no they won't accept offers. why put ONO on the advert then?
 
POA - drives me nuts!! When I was looking for a show horse, I had a substantial budget, and yet would not call people advertising with POA, I just can't stand it - say how much you want, why not??? I don't understand why people wont say?! Do they want to judge the amount based on how wealthy the caller sounds??

I don't mind reading "Not Novice Ride" but please state why it isn't a novice ride, eg, just a bit spooky, or rears and bucks for first ten minutes everytime you get on??

Any TBs or PBTBs with have "Northern Dancer Lines" in the advert... find me a TB without Northern Dancer in it somewhere!

"Lots of Potential" when describing a horse older than 8yo that has done nothing to date - surely by then the potential should be 'actual' rather than potential.

I know someone that did this, buyer came down their drive in a very flash car, cost about the same as my house so they upped the price by 10k on a horse that was worth about 2k!!!

2 Year olds with a rider on saying been there done it!!! How? How is that possible?????? They haven't had time to grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

POA puts me right off as i feel it means "well outa your league love" :D
Bad pictures there just annoying.
I also hate when the advert is perfect then when you go to see the horse it has something wrong with it like wont pass 5 stage vetting or some medical issue ... if they had of stated its problem in the advert it wouldnt have wasted both parties times.
