What is your pet hate when it comes to adverts?

Someone not putting at least the area where the horse is.Riders without a hat.Looks unprofessional to me.Very young horses being sold as confidence givers.Old horses that have been good servants being sold on.Not novice ride without giving the reason.Lots of potential! That is, unless the price reflected the fact that, up to date, potential unrealized.

OK, another one for "no timewasters, joy riders or dreamers".....! sounds too stroppy a person to deal with. Ads that miss out the very basic info of height and age, poor english and the final one - if you are asking a decent price for a horse, why on earth would you post photos of the horse looking incredibly scruffy? again, it makes me think that if the vendor can not be bothered about turning the horse out nicely - what else do they not bother about?

My horse's advert at the moment says "Readvertised due to timewasters" because that's exactly why he's been readvertised! They came to see him twice, asked us not to let anyone else see him because they wanted him, asked me for vets practices to use for vetting etc then ignored my calls when I asked to know what was going on and whether we could go ahead with the vetting. Then eventually rang back and said we've decided he's a bit too young for what we are looking for.

We had to turn quite a few people away and stupidly didn't write down a list of everyone who was interested to be able to ring them back.

That was very unlucky for you... best way of sorting that out in the future would be that if anyone wants you to do that, you insist on a deposit (and as you said, take down numbers)

However, there have been a number of horses being sold from our yard and YO will not stop the horse being seen by others until said horse is sold. She is honest with everyone so they know what the score is but, sadly, without any financial commitement, most people can very easily change their mind.

Might I suggest you amend your ad to request people who called your earlier to call back? and think it really is worth your while to explain what happened. "readvertised due to timewasters" can smack of a failed vetting...

I cant stand -:

Bad photos, its not really that hard to take one decent photo....

Wrong horse is photos/wrong breed - I saw an ad for a pure bred CB that was registered with Cb society and had top CB bloodlines...the horse in the advert was grey :D they even said gorgoeus dapple grey cleveland bay???? go figure!

Over priced horses

One line adverts

Adverts say the horse is a great show jumper, dressage start etc but shows no picutures or vids of this....

'POA' Why can't they just put the price? I automatically think that the horse will be really expensive, so I don't bother ringing them/ emailing them. Also bad quality pictures, or photo shopped pictures, oh and adverts written as though they are a horse eg 'Hello my name is Bert and i'm looking for a new mummy' and bad grammar in the advert. :D

Having recently advertised my horse I can understand the 'price reduced for quick sale' and 'readvertised due to timewasters'. Our prospective buyer doesn't appear to be a timewaster but we've put about fifteen people off to give her first refusal so if she changes her mind (hopefully she won't!) then this would have delayed us a lot! Luckily we do have a list.

Also, I do need to sell him quickly as I am leaving the country - I've already advertised him for less than I would have thought he was worth, so I'm not being 'greedy' but if I needed to I wouldn't hesitate to drop his price further to improve the chance of finding him a good home.

No wonder there are so many posts on here about "why can't I sell my horse" if this thread is an example of how fussy potential buyers are!!

I recently bought a new horse and the advert (even in my opinion) was C**P had many "pet hates" in it, but I took a chance and went to see the horse who turned out to be excatly what I wanted.

Who said horse selling and buying was ment to be easy!

If you need to sell then I wouldn't put other people off.

The easy way to avoid timewasters is to tell everyone that the horse is available to view and buy until a deposit is put down. Do not turn anyone away until the deposit is paid. If you do put anyone off for any reason keep a note of their number. With the best will in the world people can drop out of purchases.

biggest pet hate?: blatant lying! or contradicting E.G "schoolmaster but not novice ride"
especially when you go to see a "laid back first horse, novice ride" who proceeds to bolt around the menage when you ask for canter a little too suddenly for the horses liking (was a victim of this!)
if your horse has a problem and you love the horse you wouldnt want it to go to a novice who will probably sell it on shortly after for pittance. be honest and you get the right buyer.
and they expect to not be caught out in the viewing! XD had 4 horses completely different to the adverts and completely wrong for me, why would i buy them?

i agree ossy! i dont believe half of an advert so you have to use your luck and take the chance or you'll never buy!

So many of these I hate!! Spent ages last year looking for my mare (I was after the same as everyone else - super safe lovely horse with a bit of ability and personality, so we spent a long time looking!). In that time I came to hate all of the following and more!

Not novice ride - when no reason is given. I wouldn't consider myself novicy, but I don't want to be bucked into the next county either!
Rubbish pic of blurry up close head, or mud covered rugged horse in the distance.
Ad saying how fab the horse is at jumping/dressage/whatever or has fab conformation, but then just showing one pic of the horse in the distance.
Also, 'potential'. As others have said, at 10+ years old I am looking at what it has done, not what it might/might not be up to doing!
Pics that are years old - when you turn up to see the perfect sounding horse that you have chatted about, to find a poor out of work soul and the pic was of it popping a lovely sj round!!
"I am a woovely horsie and I want a new mummy", puke!
Standing on the back type pics - the horse might be fab, but makes me think it is owned by total muppets. What else might they have mucked up?
Also POA, although my budget was v decent, it makes me think I can't afford it, I don't even bother calling.
Top show prospect - showing a horse only its mother could love.

Gosh, I sound really grumpy! All I would like is a clearly written advert of facts, including age and height (the correct ones!) and location. Along with things the horse has actually done! This, plus a couple of good clear recent pics. Can't be too much to ask surely?!

But at the end of the day sellers want someone to part with several thousand pounds of their hard earned cash, it is no surprise that they will have to put a bit of effort in if they want the best price.

It is expensive, time consuming and tiring looking at horses, cutting out certain ads reduces the chances of me being disappointed and wasting time. I've arrived to see a horse, and known that it wasn't suitable the minute it was lead out of the box. Had there been decent pictures I wouldn't have traipsed over to see it and wasted everyone's time. I consider owners that can't produce a half decent ad are timewasters just as much as indecisive buyers.

Horse buying is never going to be easy, but honest clear ads would make it a darn sight less difficult and frustrating all round!

I dont like it when they put down not novice ride and dont say why.

Also Ive never emailed and think you should ring up first not email. Is this right or wrong?

it really annoyes me when they put a HUGE descition and then at the end say 'price low coz of .... ect' its like why cant they put it like first?
and POA? whats the point just put it there!!?

also not putting the horses name in the advert , i find kinda strange

and putting the 1st pic as jumping like a 4ft oxer than in descibtion says 'retired from jumping' madness

Sellers who dont give you a clue where they are in the country!

Also the usual POA and 'absolutely no time wasters'.

Plus adverts that dont tell you enough.

Things that really annoy me are:
POA
'Not a novice ride'
Blurry photos
When the seller writes a sentence or two about the horse and doesn't give any details
Bad spelling/Grammar
Adverts written 'by the horse'
Photoshopped images

And quite a few more haha. But those are the main few :p

I dont object to "not a novice ride", so long as its followed by "because......". Otherwise it could be anything between once on the 3rd tuesday of every other month it can be a bit strong, to it rears vertical and doesnt come down for the whole ride!

It winds me up when dealers don't put their addresses or home numbers on their site. Fair enough, it is quite understandable, but with no hint at a location it makes me feel wary.
And another dealer thing, when they use practically the same description for each horse, but just changing the name and he's and her's

I would class a time waster as someone who comes along on a sunday afternoon for a free ride..Believe me there are people with nothing better to do.
Or someone who says theyre very interested want the horse and dont pay a deposit.
I have also known of someone who paid a deposit then failed to collect the horse.

I sometimes feel like putting no time wasters in my adverts but i think you can get a good idea if someone is suited or interested over the phone before they come and view.

I also cant stand POA

biggest pet hate?: blatant lying! or contradicting E.G "schoolmaster but not novice ride"

To me a schoolmaster knows their job, is safe and will take you up the levels - my YO has a stunning SJ schoolmaster but he is DEF not for novices. He likes everything to be done correctly (down to how you sit and apply your canter aids) or he won't do it at all (so great for learning!) and while he'll take me (intermediate sort of rider who trains own youngsters but never SJed beyond 90cm) over 1m30 fences if I simply keep a good canter on the way in, he is NOT a novice ride - too well schooled for that.

I can understand POA. If you were selling a horse for £30k, would you want proof out there for the tax man? You would have to spend £30k on like for like to get round it so you can't blame people. Also, if you were selling a horse for big bucks would you really want every nosey splitar5e in the village knowing exactly how much?
Personally, hate 'conformation' pics of the right side.
Also hate rambling, long sentences - hurt my brain, as do !!!!!

'No timewasters' - never understand what that means! Does it mean if you want to come back several times to make sure this is the horse for you, and decide after all it isn't, that you are a timewaster??

Also - if there is such a thing as a professional time waster / day tripper, does this stop them looking as said horse.

Ooo - I've thought of more annoying things ...

'Always in the rossettes / great for a child who wants to go out and win' - horses are not machines and don't always go nicely for a new rider.

Definately silly photo's - there is a guy who sells horses locally who always advertises them with a picture of him laying down the the stable with them!!?? No ridden shots either!
