At this time of year I am driven mad by over rugged horses, but have ignored all threads on here based on rugs and ignored every over rugged horse I see. Rugs are not my thing, but I know they are others so I leave them to it.

My thing is feeding. Unfortunately for me, I won't need to feed any hay or hard feed until at least Christmas, but I am itching to start feeding! I love the smell, I love mixing it up, I even love buying it. I love the ponies happy faces when they see their buckets :) But I have 2 fat natives and plenty of grass to keep them going for weeks yet, so for now I'll indulge my other "thing" which is numnah's.

What is your thing?

Awesome thread ^ ^

Mine is putting them to bed at night! I just love seeing them all tucked in and ready for sleep. When we moved yards we went from living out 24/7 to stabled at night and my mare adores it. I call her in (if she isn't at the gate yelling for me already) and put the radio on for a bit, give her a goodnight brush and a kiss, then it's lights out. The sound of happy horses chewing hay together is like those whale song spa CDs. Even better in winter when it's cold and blowing outside. That's my thing, hehe.

I get to feed mine all year round, now, due to grass intolerance and EMS! So I get that lovely munching sound, but there is something extra special about hearing it on a cold night!
My other thing is a nice bed. This is somewhat at odds with my dislike of stabling, but I get to indulge it because my shelter floods if I don't raise the floor. I top old bedding with grass mats and will have a proper bed there in the colder weather. I bought a supply of Easibed today and can't wait to shake it out. ☺

I like putting them to bed at night too, I think that's my favourite thing about winter, and a hack on a crisp morning when no one is about, that's pretty cool too.

In summer I think my favourite thing is the length of the day, and the warmth, and seeing the horses all sleek and dapply in the summer sun.

Grooming is definitely my thing. I have a white grey, so I have every lotion and potion under the sub, and a grooming kit that is overflowing and probably unnecessary, but surprisingly I use pretty much everything in it! I hate a manky horse and spend a lot of time grooming before and after riding to keep on top of it.

Ugh I have too many things. Grooming and washing, preparing for competitions (I love a good plaiting session), rugs, matchy-matchy, feeding (especially supplements), a good bale of hay, everything.
I think my 'thing' is just horses in general ;)

I'm a feeder, but not soo much feed, its supplements with me! I've always liked to give them a broad spectrum something or other, and then I got my big chestnut boy who had crap feet and sweet itch and I got a bit obsessed with the dramatic change in him from feeding various things.

Now I just have my tough little good doer cob who hasnt, touch wood! got any issues and is fine with a basic mineral balancer. Doesnt stop me looking at new supplements, reading all the research, looking at the ingredients and wanting to buy things he doesnt need!

What a great thread ...

I clipped my lad on Friday and now realise that clipping is one go my "things" ... I love it, and have a hairy beast who will need at least two more hair cuts this winter, so I can indulge my clipping thing all over again.

Other than that, I'm fortunate to have access to a great off-road, woodland ride so I just love wandering about in the woods on a sunny day so I'd say that's very much my thing, too. Me, the pony and lots of peace and quiet .... bliss.

My thing is winter. I moan about lack of sleep and early mornings, but I adore bringing him in, grooming him, feeding him and saying goodnight, then seeing him first thing next morning, turning him out with the sunrise.

My thing is stabling. I love cleaning them out, putting everyone in bed with dinner and hay but I have to stop myself cause when the weathers good they just don't need to come in overnight!

Weirdly, mine is mucking out.

I like transforming a messy stable into a lovely clean one with new clean bedding all nice and levelled. It has to be raked level and have no footprints too.

Highly OCD but I get a weird sense of satisfaction out of it

Listening to them eating in evening in winter when there's only me on the yard.
Listening to them eating grass in summer .
I love getting them back from hunting .
I love the moment a young horse twigs it's got eye to foot coordination and starts to experiment with it.

Clipping out, wiping over with a hot cloth, grooming with a soft brush and enjoying the shine and velvety coat.
I will be doing this soon!
I also love clean tack, but not tack cleaning!

Any chance you can Pm me how you do that? :)

Me too..

I love cleaning his stable. Sad as it is but I never feel it's done right if I haven't done it and I hate people helping me.

I love washing my horse too and making him spotless but he hates baths so that takes the fun out of it. Shame he is grey and needs so many baths.

I love it when they are all happily grazing. I also love seeing them play (was fabulous when they were young, but they are growing out of it a bit now) or have a (sensible) hooley. There's nothing better than watching them move and being able to tick each one off as sound though!

I love, apart from early morning rides in the summer, just watching the horses out in the fields. There's a herd of about 10 mares at my yard that all live out together and it's just fascinating to see the way they interact, the pair bonds, the pecking order, the little disagreements and the way the body language between them can be so subtle but so effective. Could watch them all day, it's my thang.

Everything? haha I do love buying rugs so they looks smart and cosy, I have 3 saddles and only 1 riding horse at the moment haha I love going up on a cold winter night to feed, Horse Hugs, Organizing my the boot of my car with all the lotions and potions in boxes and all the extras. I also seem to buy a lot of lead ropes for some reason.

My cupboard. I bloody love my cupboard. It's a big metal one, with wooden shelves, and home-made hooks for hanging things. It has all my supplements, bottles of lotions and potions, first aid kit, travel stuff, exercise sheet, waffle cooler, fleece, spare headcollars, spare leadropes and my tub of spare measuring scoops. And as it's metal and my torch is magnetic, I can stick the torch to it and light it all up. It's unhealthily satisfying to realise I need to get something from my cupboard, and to find it exactly where it's supposed to be, in its designated area. I need to get a life...

I also love putting Billy out at night, when it's just dark, but not wintery enough for him to stay in. I love his calm presence next to me in the dark on the way out to the field, and the sleepy bedtime feeling from the rustle of his night-time rug.

I love that feeling after a brilliant hack and you turn them back out in the field and watch them mooch about contentedly. Feels like everything is right with the world.

Also, love working with untouched babies. :)

Me too, my boy's on shavings and I actually sweep the broom over the surface as I back out of the stable to make sure all footprints are eradicated, the walls have to be perfectly level and even and the edges of the clear bit by the door have to be perfect.

Grooming is another one of my 'things'. Mine is a grey and white skewbald and I can never leave him looking grubby either before or after I ride. It does make life easier when I go to shows as any surface dirt brushes away easily. I have learned the knack of being able to make his tail respectable without the need for washing it. Luckily, he loves being groomed, especially when I find his itchy spots :)

I am another who loves seeing my horse all snuggly with a deep clean bed, generous haynet and snuggly rugs when I leave for home on winter evenings.

My biggest vice though is saddle cloths. Damned Le Mieux, they've just brought out their luxury pads in the most gorgeous peacock green and despite having more saddle cloths than I can use, I'm just going to HAVE to have one (or two if get the CC jumping and the dressage versions).

This sounds like my idea of heaven haha my parents are moving soon and have a huge garage which my sister and I have already claimed half of it for saddle racks, bridle holders, rug racks and the thought of being able to organize it all makes me so excited. I think I need a life as well haha

Hearing them munching contentedly, whether that's in the paddock or in their stables. Makes me feel satisfied.

Also having everything clean, neat and organised.

Same here, but ours is straw and it has to be just so at the edge. Not quite to the old Pony Club extreme of plaiting the edges but not far off!

I'm another one with a fondness for supplements, especially hoof related ones. Unfortunately my mare can be quite fussy so my cupboard if full of the remains of 'failed' supplement experiments - really must get rid of that turmeric!

another of my "things" is picking salads of hedgerow herbs, which I give her for a treat - a typical salad will contain dandelion leaves, sticky willie, cow parsley, hawthorn shoots, willow leaves and anything else seasonal.
