What joint supplements are worth it - my 15 year old TB mare has had her fair share of incidents... locking stifle desmotomy in Feb 2008, followed by a 2 inch hair line fracture of a hind cannon bone in June 2008, followed by DDFT lesion in July 2010 and she is thankfully sound and in full work but I have noticed literally this week her joint (hock) is clicking. I was wondering if a joint supplement may be beneficial as she enters her mid teens. She did have a cortisone injection in her hock in 2009 after the year spent on box rest in 2008. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

We use glucosamine on our arthiritic horse, have found it really good. We were recomended magnitude by the vet, it's actually a calmer but also works as a muscle relaxent so stops them tensing etc. Alpha bute is also good if the horse is lame/stiff and can just be used when the horse looks particularly stiff.

I use glucosamine and micronised linseed and cod liver oil for my boys clicky hocks and joints.
I was also advised Cider Apple Vinger but this didn't work or us.

Turmeric, keep hearing great things plus it's quite cheap. Rose hips, lots about at the minute, pick and feed and dry excess for later.

You've got quite a few suggestions already but Cortaflex is incredible stuff. Unfortunately not the cheapest supplement around but it worked wonders for my old boy and I recommend it to everyone, he really was a different horse on it. He had the HA version (yellow top, stronger than the green top) as his joints had taken a battering in his early years and the green wasn't quite enough for him but I was amazed at the difference x

If they have had previous problems or excessive competition "wear and tear" then I find Cortaflex HA with the added silicon works best (the yellow topped liquid). If the problem is milder then I use Kentucky Solution - made by the same people as it is significantly cheaper. Also consider if they get enough oils in their diet (especially Omega) most are added to feeds or feed balancers.
