What joint supplements do you use?


I use Riaflex 50:50 on my 17 yold.

I use a supplement cos the vet recommended putting him on an MSM/Gluco product to help him with his stiffness. Other than that he is pretty decent shape.

A few friends recommended Riaflex but I am wondering whether I should change to something else as I changed to the 50:50 from the Complete version due to finances and I am not sure the 50:50 version is as good.

What do you use?

I bought NAF 5* superflex for my arthritic mare but she wouldn't eat it as it smells disgusting. So my sister's horse had that and my mare's now on Cortaflex. We bought a 3.6kg tub for far cheaper than lots of smaller ones. I'm not sure whether it's the Cortaflex or just good luck but she's stayed sound since I started her on it

I use 5* superflex. Took a few days to get my fussy horse to eat it cause it has a wee bit of a smell though. Also used to use Cortaflex. Overall i would say that the superflex is the better of the two

I was given this by my vet, however, after reading the ingredients, it is only 1800mg glucosamine per 5g scoop. So feeding 10g a day would only give him 3600mg a day of Glucosamine and the recommended and tested dose is 10000mg a day for an average 500kg horse.

I also didn't like the fact that it has Devils Claw in it which is a natural pain killer as i'm worried it will just mask any problems......

So, now I have my boy on Newmarket Supplement (10000mg Glucosamine) which seems to be doing the trick although he's only been on it 2 weeks!

NAF also do a 10000mg Glucosamine suplement, but this also contains MSM.

I really think it depends on what you're feeding the supplement for?

I'm feeding it for potential cartilage and soft tissue damage so I need something specifically targeted to that.

If you are just feeding it for general maintenance then any of the off the shelf products like 5* Supaflex and Cortaflex would do the trick, and then for older horses/arthritics you would probably need something more geared towards pain releif and anti inflamatory like Devils Claw, apple cider vinegar etc
 
interesting, its what the vets recommended to us so we ended up using it (he had a problem in his neck that was compressing his spinal cord due to bony changes from an old injury there, was injected with steroid into the area and now on flexadin).

What i was told about Cortaflex twas that it doesnt contain glucosamine or chrondatin, only "elements of" if you look at the label?
 
Cortaflex / Cortavet is marketed in a very different way.
Go onto the website and they will go into the product, you are correct it doesn't contain any glucosamine or chondroitin per se.

I think there are much better glucosamine/chondroitin products on the market than flexiden.
 
Yes my vet recommended Flexadin but then he recommended Cortaflex which isn't really useful to my boy as it doesn't contain glucosamine.... but I must add that this was recommended before X-rays were done when the vet thought he had arthritis in the joint. Now we know 99% that it's soft tissue damage, i'm going with pure glucosamine.

According to my vet the HA in Cortaflex is a waste of time as it cannot be absorbed by the horse orally...... it has to be injected into the joint. The same has been claimed of MSM and some of the other widely marketed joint supplements.

It's such a minefield of information to be honest that you wither A) do what your vet says or B) do your own research and make up your own mind what is right for your horse
 
Cortaflex everytime, use it on my 22 year old horse and touch wood he is fab on it. You can tell the difference when he dosent take it.
I recommend it to everyone - quite pricey but I think its well worth it!!!!

Yes well that was what I have been advised so that only leaves Newmarket Joint Supplement (Glucosamine only) or the NAF Glucosamine & MSM (which I think is alot cheaper)..... I think one of the 'Senior' feed balancers also contains 10000mg glucosamine? Think it is Top Spec but don't quote me
 
NAF 5* superflex. Tried cortaflex (no change) and the various gold label ones (useless) and this is the only thing that sort of works. When I stopped using it he was noticeably stiff and now he is only a bit stiff coming out of his stable.
