A spaniel would certainly fit the bill (although I'm a Labrador girl myself!). If you are looking for a very gentle dog, the Cavaliers have the sweetest, gentlest nature imaginable!!

How much grooming do you want to do? Would you tolerate moulting? How trainable do you want him/her to be? Do you want a lap type dog or something with a bit of get up and go?

There's lots of things to consider when choosing a dog...there's a fab quiz on www.petplanet.co.uk on dog selection.

Cockers = nightmare coat (one of the thickest), ear infections, breed damaged massively by breeding to 'type' and one of the worst people biters known to man. Apart from that, lovely breed.

Border terrier, lovely little dogs, friendly with other dogs and love horses and children, not so great with cats tho. My friend has 2 of them and they are super little characters, I would have one tomorrow!!!

Cavalier king charles spaniels are the sweetest natured dog you'll ever find. They are friendly with everything and everyone. Need to make sure parents have been health screened tho as they do suffer a few hereditory conditions, they are lovely family pets.

whippets, this nicest dogs you could have, very loving loyal and lazy lol, great with kids young and old, (2 kids 3 and 5years)
we have 2 whippets and in the house you wouldnt even know they where there, (curled up sleeping somwhere)
but the min you go out the have bags of enery, either just for a short "fast" sprint round a field/park or for a long walk.
minimal grooming, all though they do like to have a roll in anything stinky, so they do need the odd extra bath now and again.
i have had a few dogs in my time, but since having whippets i dont think i will have anything else,
good luck whatever you decide

Spangle all the way, though a springer would be just as good as a cocker!

But working bred cockers are a very busy little breed, as are springers so do require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation if they aren't being worked.

Henry is a rescued show type, he has a regular haircut for his coat and his temperament is second to none (see my proud mum post!). However he does have mild hip dysplasia so you should look for a good breeder, insist on seeing hip scores (along with health tests for any other problems - not sure what these are, as I said Henry was second hand!) and meet the pup's parents with your children present. However I would say this goes for any breed.

Agree 100%. Just pays to be very carefull, know the parents etc.

Today at my agility class were a couple of Miniature Schnauzers. I must say they were lovely little dogs, worth looking in to!

Cocker Spaniel might be a good choice, Springers can be more of a handful though!

If all else fails you could go to a rescue, save a dog and know the dog for it's individual characteristics not its breed? If you choose this route you are probably better to get a pup though if it's to be a family dog!

My staffies come with me everywhere, including when I go riding. They love the horses are great with children and even poo pick for me!

What about a border collie, they're not much bigger than a cocker spaniel. Great little dogs - always wanting to please but can be a bit sneaky when they want to be
