okay i am leaving whisper heavy weight out doors rug on him at night
because it has a neck rug on
my dad wants me to put on his to middle weight stable rugs on him with no neck cover
my argument
he has no windows with things in (has the frames not glass or plasitc) he has two large windows in his stable so its not exactly warm
he is 5 so young and i dont want him being cold
he does nto exactly have a thick coat, although not clipped his coat it snot think
wht are are you veiws and opinions

All ours are living in their heavyweight outdoor rugs at the mo. No point bringing them in to put freezing cold rugs on to just put freezng outdoor rugs on again in the morning.

thats what i see
my dad says i am being lazy in not changing his rug, i said if i had a stabel rug with a hood i would change it
but i dont want him to get a cold neck he is only 5 if he gets to cold it will mean he is stiff, and he is also always in a bad mood in the mornigns to turn out if he has not had the neck cover on coincidence i think not

I believe in layering as I think that keeps my lad warmer, and I like to be able to taylor his rugs to how cold the temperature goes. At the mo he's wearing a 120g stable rug with a neck, with a 220g (no neck) over that, with another 120g quilt on top and he was lovely and toasty this am!

George is just living in his 360g turnout with neck all the time at the moment. He is a TB shire x with a high chaser clip and seems quite comfortable.

my dads arguement it he needs to have air between him and the rug an keeping the same rug on just means that there is not air flow
but when he has the stable rugs on they rub more on his shoulders
and as i said he is always in a foul mood in the morning

i would do thsi if i had a stable rug with a neck on it
but i dont so he keeps his outdoor rug on him as it has a neck

Full neck HW stable rug

He is freshly hunter clipped (done 2 days ago)

Lord has (irish clipped but growing out)
LW stable rug- no neck

if i attempted to put whisper out without a rug i belive i would be killed he does not like being cold one bit, he becomes really badly behaved towards teh shetlands and me

During the day Jaffa (fully clipped ISH) has

1x 300g Rambo liner
1x 100g Rambo liner
1x 100g Rambo Duo

total 500g. It hasn't gone above -2 the last few days!

at night

1x 300g Rambo liner (means I don't have to take off what's next to her skin which is an added bonus!)
1x combo fleece
1x 200g Rhino stable with neck

Roughly 600g (diff to guess with fleece)

I def wouldn't put a LIGHTER rug on at night in a stable.... Remember they can't move around and the temp is dropping a lot at night.

i've 2 arabs that live out 24/7.

my mare is currently wearing a lightweight under rug with a full neck heavy weight turn out rug on top. my gelding is wearing a a fleece, a medium weight under rug and heavyweight turn out rug.

but i must admit, i do add or take off rugs on a regualr basis, depending on if it warms up or the temperature plummets again  although, both seem more than happy :)

the rugs my dad want on him at night are probably heavier in total but they dont have the neck cover on

I think you are doing the right thing. My horse is in a heavy weight stable rug with no neck at night so i am adding a light weight turnout over the top with a heavy weight hood attached. He is warm and happy with that!

well both mine are currently wearing..................................nothing nowt

ones about 31 and sweats up unless its about its about -5.....................the other is just as toasty!!

ducks and runs for cover :)

they are both warm

My trace clipped Arab x keeps her MW combo outdoor rug on overnight, neck folded down! Time is so tight in the morning it's much easier! In previous winters she wears a under rug and a MW stable rug this year shes a bit fat am trying to get weight off :rolleyes:My friends Irish draft is in 2 x HW rugs ( is over rugged IMO )

my NF is wearing his HW Rambo Wug 370g, he is neck, bib and belly clipped at end of November. He is living out and we have snow and it will go down to -7 tonight.

When i bought him I did not think I would need HW rugs for him as he is a warm pony but I am glad I made the investment as with the weather last year and this year being very cold he has been living in his HW rug most of the winter. I am hoping he is going to be warm enough.

My horses live out, clipped tb is in a heavy weight, full neck rambo; unclipped anglo arab was naked until yesterday when I took pity on her & put a medium weight rug on her BUT this morning she looked really pee'd off so I took it off & she cheered up straight away.

So she's back to being naked, no doubt there will be lots of muttering about how cruel I am amongst some of the other liveries.

Big cobby one is in 400gm outdoor rug 24/7 at present for field in daytime & stable at night, I won't change whilst its so cold & just quarter her lightly when she comes in.
Little one has a rain sheet just for damp weather, but for the past 3 days has been sporting a elderly but servicable mw Rambo for 24/7 in and out

If/when it starts to be wet & horribly muddy (what is that word mud?) then I'll go back to changing rugs for night time.

mine has one relatively heavy stable rug with neck and she is quite hot in that. she is a generally hot horse though, i have never known her to feel cold in her stable. but then her stable is out of the wind and is known for being one of the warmer boxes.

i think if your horse is ok in the heavier one , leave it at that for now. if he shows signs of being too hot, change down. its not like the weather is suddenly warming up!

Cooper had a full clip about 4-5 weeks ago and he is going out in his HW turnout with neck and i've been leaving it on him at night too. He is in a small barn of 4 stables which has some sort of cladding round it which makes it insulated so is quite a bit warmer in the barn than it is outside. He is quite toasty warm in that. Might start putting a LW stable rug under his HW when we move to our new yard as they dont have the same insulation in the walls.

At the moment my boys are wearing their Turnout rugs in their stables as the stables have wooden slats above the bricks at the back and if we get snow overnight, it is possible it could blow in and soak them! My Appy is fully clipped and is wearing a LW Stable rug and a HW Combo Turnout Rug and my ISH has a blanket clip and is wearing a HW Combo Turnout Rug. My two ponies at home live out 24/7. They are both natives and are unclipped. The older one is wearing a MW High neck Turnout rug and the younger one is wearing a LW standard neck Turnout rug and a LW combo Turnout rug on top.

If it's only a choice of those two rugs, and he's happier with the heavyweight on then I would leave that on overnight, but in the morning take it off for 10 mins in the stable so he can have an itch, then pop it back on

My opinion anyway

Nothing I am afraid as he does not seem to be needing it at all at the moment...he has loads of fur and is carrying a bit more weight than I would like so he is fine in his stable with nothing...always warm in the mornings.

My unclipped WB in in a lightweight stable rug with no neck at night, feels warm and she loses weight at the drop of a hat if she is too hot/cold so i can see that she is ok as she is maintaining condition.

Chaser clipped sec A lives out and has rambo liner with heavy weight on top. he is an old boy and hates the cold.

HW Rambo Wug, day and night. I do take it off for a brush, itch etc. He has a high chaser clip thats growing out.

I do think we are a nation of over rugging tbh, how did they cope years ago when all we had were canvas NZ, runs off to hide :)

Back to OP, if hes happy in full neck rug, I would leave that on.

Boys live out 24/7 and only one has a rug on (bit of pansy). He lives in his breathable HW full neck. It's not been above freezing weeks now and he's not been too hot or too cold yet. Rest are woolly mammoths and perfectly warm even in the snow.

The big bear has the last of her trace clip growing out but otherwise hairy - she's not rugged at all, in the stable or when she goes out. Perfectly toasty too, even at -15.

mine are unclipped and out 24/7, jay has HW combo with a HW half neck over the top, fizz has 2 MW turnouts on.

My horse is wearing an outdoor heavy weight Premier Equine combo rug. If extra cold at night, she wears her Thermatex underneath it.

My shetland is wearing nothing because he a/ doesn't need a rug and b/ trashes them.
