Very interesting read, thank you, especially interesting about the longest live foal pregnancy!!! OMG!! and the size of the foals in these long length pregnancies!! I'm not asking the question because I think my mares overdue, infact she is only 320 days today, I'm just interested to know what span is average in a maiden?
Very interesting results on that report AP. My goodness, it was a wide variation on dates. I'm going to be a zombie when it's approaching my mares date!!
Had the vet to check my girl yesterday as she is around 335 days and no sign of any mammary gland development whatsoever. This will be her third and I am told she was approx 335-340 days with the first two
Dont worry says he looks like it could be another month !
399 days and no miscalculating. Very healthy normal sized foal - was worried to death myself - but totally no need. Very normal lad! Just me that was frazzled.
competitiondiva: wrt the sizes of the foal at birth, as whitewood has noted above, the gestation can be long, but the foal can be a normal size.
This is part of the problem with the concept of "due dates". A foal can be born at 320 days and be fully developed and healthy, but equally a foal could be born at 370 days and still be underdeveloped/"premature".
Premature: the foal is underdeveloped at birth, regardless of the length of gestation
Dysmature: foal born is born later than the normal range of dates for expected foaling, but still shows signs of incomplete development
Postmature: the foal has been retained too long, and may be too large, but emaciated fur to insufficient nutrition
