I have read countless times that old dogs should have a lower level of protein- but the food we feed her has 26% protein which is high in comparison to many foods. Is this ok- or is this why she farts so much!?
How can I tell its good quality protein? She is fed Royal Canin Maxi Mature and one Pedigree Chum denta stick daily to keep teeth clean.... but her farts smell like she has just pooed in the loungeDepends on the dog and the quality of the protein. If she is active enough and fit enough I wouldn't worry. And I wouldn't blame it for the farts!!!!!!!

really? ok, what would be a good quality brand? Im happy to change if it helps as royal canin is £47 a bag!Yeah that is not a good protein source. Crappy food.
Try getting a better quality food.
I am not comfortable feeding anything less that 20% at a minimum unless there is a medical reason.

she's never had raw and shes rising 9 years old- would it be too late to change?Well I would personally prefer the protein from things like raw (or cooked) meat, eggs and fish rather than the grain or minimal meat content of dry food...I feed 19% protein as it is the only thing that has stabilised his skin, but there is very little goodness in that, it's basically 'filler', to make him feel like he has eaten, then I top it up with the above.
Raw chicken wings (fed separately from dry food) or legs would be better for her teeth, I find those products a bit gimmicky![]()
she'll be gutted to loose the denta sticks- she adores them- and I give her one as i leave the house for work in the morning so she doesnt focus on the fact I have gone... unless they cause the farts I'll keep feeding them as they are a good distraction. I've not seen fish4dogs before is it a specailist product- not seen it in PAH, Countrywide or the vets?
