What make of rugs to fit a welsh D?

I got my lovely Welsh D in Febuary this year, and I'm now at the stage of buying her a winter wardrobe :)

However, I'm wondering what makes of rug are most likely to fit her shape well?

I'm asking this because I was planning to buy all premier equine stuff for her. I got her a lightweight in Feb (she had been out naked all winter!) and I bought a size 6'. However, I was so excited when she arrived, I chucked it on, thought it looked ok and turned her out. The next day when the light was better I thought 'oh dear, its a tad big!'. Too late to send it back though. I exchanged the fleece I'd bought for a 5'9" but to be honest, that's not a 100% great fit either - it looks a smidgen short over her back (the humpy bit for the hindquarters is slightly too far forward so it doesn't sit right) and is still very deep cut so comes quite far down her legs.

Poor pony got a terrible fright this afternoon wearing the lightweight turnout - she was grazing and a fly must have been bothering her - she went to kick forward and up towards her belly and she got caught in the cross surcingles, despite them being the shortest they could go! I feel awful - she got such a fright and rug is now trashed.

So I'm think that PE is just not a good shape of fit for her - too deep cut for her.

My field mates ponies are both 5'9" so I'm going to try on all the makes of rugs they have tomorrow but does anyone have any suggestions? What do your section d's wear?

I've had 5'9 Fal Pros which have fitted my mare lovely each time :)

I may too possibly have a Niksi rug, which fits her lovely also.... :o
 
my 14.2 welsh has 5'6 and 5'9 rugs- he has mainly weatherbeetas (as I find they fit everything!) but also has a loveson fleece and an allpro turnout which fit ok for cheap rugs. Last winter he even wore an old saxon 6'3 turnout as it got a bit cold, it was a bit big but I sewed up the surcingles so he couldn't get his legs caught and he was nice and warm!
Although I do have a strange welsh cob- he is of the 'with withers' variety, and tends to be a little underweight in the winter, unlike most round ones, so what fits my boys shape might not be right for yours!
I find the hardest part to fit is round his neck and shoulders- because they are quite upright I find most rugs hang off his shoulder blades a bit and water tends to get under his rugs, helped by getting a slightly larger size and doing it up tighter!
 
Horsemadelsie - My girl is also of the 'with withers' variety! She's not a round welshie either. I'm going to give my field mates weatherbeeta a try tomorrow, thank you!

ChristmasSparkels - I've never had a FalPro but know they have a reputation for being good quality so will see what I can find online.

It would be so much easier if you could take the horse to the shop to try stuff on - I wonder if my local tack shop would let my girl use their changing rooms?!? ;)
 
mine is in 6'6" /6'9" and i like horsewear and rhino rugs,but they might be a bit deep for ur pony as mines a long legged beasty:)
 
Have never had a welsh D but my old English Arab is often mistaken for one! If yours is that kind of build then I would definitely recommend weatherbeeta or fal pro! Good luck!
 
I use Fal pro - would rather buy a good second hand of this make than cheapie new ones! Mark Todds and weather beeta, all these brands have good shoulder room. I find Rambos and Amigos too narrow and won't do up around my lad's chest at all!!
 
Lol, my welshie wears 6'. Funny because she needs it length wise but they do come down to her knees and low on the chest. But I found that amigo and other horsewear fit her best so would really advise them. Good luck :)
 
M mainly has Amigo rugs, which fit him nicely :) he's a tall but stocky type of D!

Am desperate to have a horse that can wear Shires as they do some ruddy lovely rugs :p
 
Probably not what you want to hear right now... but leave her naked to drop some weight if you can. We have three Sec Ds and have finally learned that rugging them might make us feel better but in fact they are better left as nature intended so as to avoid weight issues and future laminitis.
 
^In regards to the above, they are all different with their weight. My Welshie needs his rugs to keep his weight on!! He enjoys playing in the field and has a very exuberant canter (and buck!) so seems to work any amount of weight off. He's on his haylage, two feeds and topspec year round and with any less (food or rug) goes quite scrawny. He's a stocky D too, I think he just believes he's in a TB body!

Mine fits nicely into his 6'3 amigo rugs, they are quite accommodating for his big front. They also don't slip back. I'm looking a fal on ebay but its only a newer cheaper end one- would this still fit nicely?
 
My 15.1 welsh D wears an Amigo. Tried everything else but nothing fits around his neck. The Rhino's for some reason fit my 15.1 connie but not him. The Amigo's must be more generous neck wise.
 
My boy is a section c, i found weatherbeeta fits him best, the saxon rugs also do as they aren't cut as deep as some of the others;)
Masta was certainly one to avoid with my boy, it was really deep (nearly to his knees!) and just didn't seem to fit right.

My instructor commented today that she's lost weight and is on the verge of looking too slim so I would like to get a lightweight on her this week.

Horseware and Fal have been mentioned a fair bit - off to see what deals I can get online! :)
 
Mine takes a 6'6",however will not rug if can possibly avoid it. Au natrel and out with shelter.
I did,however,have an assortment of makes from my old boy, whom I lost earlier this year, also 6'6", and the ONLY makes that fit the welsh cob are Jumpers Horseline, Shires and Masta. Premier Equine, Fal and Amigo were all ill fitting-too long, too big round neck etc.
I suspect that it maybe all down to the individual horse and its shape.
Has anyone else also got a Welshie who has not got much of a winter coat? Mine has just started to shed her summer one, but what she is growing, is hardly any thicker, whereas our others -of different breed- are like woolly mammoths.
 
Masta and amigo fit my D well - he's pretty stocky. Masta rugs are usually quite deep and last very well. I only have lightweight rugs, apart from one which is a derby house light/medium weight for when it's exceptionally cold, and that fits pretty well too.
