my 2 year old jumped out of the arena on tuesday! I wasn't there but YO said he wasn't being chased and they were just having a hooley round and he jumped out on the corner. What makes a horse jump out? They are going into summer fields tomorrow and i am worried that he will jump out onto the road. Stupid I know but it has crossed my mind. He has been in these fields before and has been out all winter 24/7. Am I worrying over nothing?

I had a horse on loan who jumped out over a 4'6" wall simply because she was out in the field on her own for 5 mins.

My neighbour's horse jumped a 6'+ hedge simply because he was bored, and he could...

My section D last summer (2yr old) scrambled over a 7ft hedge - it was a 4ft hedge with a 7ft drop to be precise :eek: onto the lane to get to mares over the other field. He was a uncut then but thankfully now he has no balls he has chilled loads! :D:D

Boredom? Al's pony used to do it because he could- only thing that stopped him was when he misjudged it and rolypolyed down the ramp out of the block.

Boredom...left on own...just for the sake of it.....variety of different reasons!

If he was having a hooey round, he probably ran out of room and met the fence a little quick and made the snap decision to jump, rather than swerve!

Is it inbuilt in some horses and not others? He is 16 hands and has a lot more growing to do yet. My 14.3 arab wouldn't dream of jumping out of anywhere. I mainly worry about him injuring himself. I hope once they are back out 24/7 he will be fine.

No idea why they do it but my shirex is a ****** for it! Has everything he needs hay, water, company etc if he cant go through it he will just go over it! His loaner says he does with her too but she finds it more amusing than i do so ive told her she can keep him! I think they just do it because they can. I know how worrying it can be, if i was you ide be making sure the fence was higher than she can jump jump to be safe as generally when theyve done it once they will do it again :(

Difficult to guess as you can't ask them, I knew a mare that I'd be did it just because she could - usually over a 5 bar metal gate !

My oldie does it for food, he just to do a lot of BSJA and so poping a 4 foot upright is nothing to him compared with getting at lovely grass (he's a fatty so usually on limited grazing)

I'm hoping he is just abit full of it as the youngters have been in the barn for the last 2 months. They go out onto 24/7 grazing on saturday and rotate around several large fields through summer so not an option to raise the fencing. Fingers crossed once they have a belly full of grass and room to run he'll be fine.
