What makes the perfect shavings bedding?

I am doing some research on shavings for my bedding exam at College and was wondering whether people could please give me their opinions on what makes their perfect shavings bed!

Does the size of the flake matter (and if so what size do you prefer)? or is it dust extraction or something else which is most important to you?

We used Bedmax for a while - it is a very large flake shaving, once we got used to it, we found it made really nice beds and it didn't break down. It's got my vote.
 
I use snowflake shavings have done for years now, tried a couple of others buy always come back to them. They aren't dusty and the flakes aren't too big or too small/fine.

Have used bedmax a few times when not been able to get snowflake but don't like the bigger flakes but would choose them over horrible fine dusty ones.
 
I used to not like Bedmax, but since my mare was on box rest I got used to using it now I keep my gelding on it too and he seems lot better on it.
 
Hunter woodchips are by far the best have tried so many others and nothing compares but they are very hard to get hold of here at the moment so am using ones called eidelspan and they are very good or if I cant get those I use plospan.

I am not that keen on the big flake type.
 
Big flake shavings - 2 stables on them. They get my vote, far preferable to small flakes, although a bale of small flakes added to a full bed of big flakes can be nice.
 
I tried Bedmax and hated them, I use Hunters have tried others but always go back to hunters. they are quite difficult get get hold of at the min so have been using eidelspan whichI like.
 
I just use ordinary shavings from local contrator. I like using shavings because they are easy to handle and when rotted down make really good top dressing for the garden, so nothing goes to waste.

It is easy to top up a bed of shavings, by putting exactly the amount you want on top. My two youngsters love fresh shavings on their beds, they always go in and lie down and then roll on new shavings.
 
Thank-you for all of your answers guys this is really helpful, if anyone has any other suggestions about what makes a perfect shavings bed perhaps as well as the flake size then please let me know!
 
I use non branded dust-free shavings.

They're the small flakes, light and very fluffy. Must be dust-free as my horse loves to roll in a fresh bed and will coat the stable/water/hay/horse/human in dust otherwise!

Only negative I can think of, is that I will definitely be investing in stable mats next winter as my friend has them and used shavings and they cut shavings costs in half!
