Well almost at 100 posts, I am more of an ask a question than an adviser, as pretty new to the Equestrian world. Most of the time I have lovely replies, sometimes get blown out of the water...I'm game!
When you see threads that have had maybe a 1,000 views with maybe 50 replies, just wondering why lurk?

Just for fun thread;)

yes, thats why I cba.

and some of the are so boring- frankly if you can't decide what your of rug your horse needs today where you are, you shouldn't have one.

Yep, also if coming to a thread too late to offer anything relevant :o

It's why I liked C&T, in the olden days before FB took over I rarely ventured to other boards as members were very active and there was always something interesting to chat about. I do think you only get back what you put in though so do have to make an effort to keep starting/posting on threads.
I have enjoyed reading (& occasionally contributing if I think I have anything to add) the political threads in club house recently.

(btw. Just stopped myself cancelling this comment... that's also why I lurk, because I've typed out a reply and then thought it not worthy of posting ) *shuts eyes and presses QR*

Reasons not to post:

Someone has already said it
There's already a consensus
I'm not in a position to reply- e.g. if I'm reading while walking to work (!)
I don't have the knowledge
I'm not sufficiently interested
If it's already turned into a witch hunt
If the original post is unreadable - a solid block of text or structured so badly it isn't clear what the question is

I do occasionally feel deterred from posting if my opinion differs wildly from most opinions so far. Sometimes it makes me think again (which is good) but sometimes it's because I assume it will just be ignored in comparison to the rest (which isn't so good; I ought to feel braver about contributing!)

"I do occasionally feel deterred from posting if my opinion differs wildly from most opinions so far."

Now call me contrary Theocat, but that's when I feel most like posting :p I think it's quite funny, when everyone else is baa'ing along like so many Leicester Longwools, to add my own point of view which is totally at odds with the received wisdom of the thread.

I missed the S at some point, there are a load of posts with an $ in from me somewhere! When I lost a few more letters I changed the keyboard on the laptop.

I have just admitted/realised that as that is not my only username 36180 is not even the true total of post :D :D
(other usernames only used in periods of dark desperation, no reporting required :p)

Don't worry your 'secret' is safe with me :p I briefly had two user names but the alternative one seems to have disappeared as mysteriously as it arrived. I never did find out who set it up on my PC as no-one ever owned up and I couldn't delete it due to a bad case of extreme stupidity :O

I'd never call you contrary :p

It depends on the tone of the thread - I'll happily pitch in if it is sheep-like rather than wolves-like!

I was quite enamoured at first, but have become a lurker as I am in the minority being both old and predominantly old school. A lot of questions crop up time and time again and having typed out replies eons ago I now just can't be bothered. Lazy I know. (Ooooo.........as an aside, am I right in thinking that CBA = can't be arsed??)

Also, there are some antagonistic posters with whom I choose not to do battle; thought I had identified them all, but nope! It appears to be the done thing to regularly change your identity so one never really knows who one is talking to. Life is too short and whilst open to new ideas in a face to face environment where you can judge both the intent and credentials of an individual more easily, I prefer the company of like minded individuals on line.

Now off to OAPs anonymous...

gunner dog-I always appreciate your posts so please don't be too much of a stranger. there are several posters on here I will not engage with too-life's too short ;)

Intriguing that people have multiple identities...call me naiive but I didn't really realise that happened. Surely then you'd have to have multiple email addresses? Surely it's stressful enough having one?!

I don't know, I do through phases of posting quite a bit and then long periods of just reading but not posting. I used to love C&T but it's a bit quiet now, and there isn't often threads in the Tack Room that I think I can add anything to. I read a lot of the vet threads because I find them fascinating, but again can't add much as I don't have a lot of recent first hand experience, so anything I could add I'm afraid would be out of date.

I haven't got multiple identities but, for some reason, my work computer (a PC that I use when I'm embroidering as Macs can't read .DST files) gave me a new identity. I don't remember setting it up and daughter and OH deny doing it so I was always confused by it but I never pretended to be anyone other than plain old me :p

I quite often type a reply and then don't post it. Sometimes because something has been covered too many times already, sometimes because I'm not really adding anything to the discussion, and sometimes because certain posters (tbf there's only three of them) rile me a bit too much and I don't really want to get into a fight.

However, as I said on the other thread, if people don't reply to threads then they're never going to be interesting, are they? :)

I feel a "resurrect C&T" mission coming on... I rarely have interesting photos that I can add as I'm usually tootling around on my own which is what puts me off doing more reports.
this is going to sound terribly snooty and I don't actually mean it that way, but I felt it was better when it was called Competition Riders, it seemed to pull in a lot of experienced people rather than invite really basic training convos about how to get a horse to load or lead nicely. (no offense to recent posters!! :o) That was the stuff I really enjoyed in CR, debates about eventing etc, constructive criticism (no one ever asks for that now :p) and the usual reports.

Facebook really has robbed the forum a bit and some of the old guard who were good for in depth discussions have gone. Can we fight the tide though?

FWIW I deleted this comment once and then thought I better post it after all, lol

I was just saying to someone else that I miss reading comp riders, I learned so much from people posting in there.

re. multiple idendities, when you know quite a lot of people on here in real life and you are struggling with stuff but wouldn't plaster it over facebook and perhaps don't want it coming p on a search on here. I'm more open about what was going on at the time now but it wouldn't have been appropriate to post some of that stuff as 'me'. Ordinarily yes you do need another email address but they are easy to set up and never actually use.

I am the same, sometimes I post a couple of replies or the odd thread but usually I just read and go. I guess as I no longer have my boy I feel as though my learning curve with him ended, and I now have limited things to add to discussion.

Until I get my photo hosting issues sorted, there will be no nice pics from me :(

Hopefully getting new connie out XC schooling soon though.

Used to love collapsing on the sofa on Saturday nights with laptop and doing my event report :D

No one would reply now though, so what would be the point.....

tricky bit of cause & effect isn't it - when the forum is quiet it doesn't get the traffic... so if there are no posts there are no posters...I'm going to make more of an effort :wink3:
Imgur works for me, or otherwise I post pics from FB,just most of mine are pro pics or through the ears pics or just horse standing about pics!

I've just this minute managed to post a pic via fb :) Don't know what I did differently from last night, but anyway :) It worked.

Roll on XC schooling.. I'd go tomorrow morning except my son has a very allergic and scared of dogs friend staying tonight.. Maybe the afternoon :)

It does get disheartening though when you get three replies to a comp report, or one to a veterinary post... I can see why folk give up posting and just lurk..
