We have a litter of 5 Jack Russell pups who are coming up to 3 weeks old. They are getting mobile now but one pup is very wobbly on her back legs. She can move her legs and get them underneath her but she just appears to have no strength in them. When i pick her up and place my hand under her back paws she doesn't really place any pressure on her back legs?
If she doesn't improve in the next few days she will be going to the vets but just wondered whether anyone else has had a similar experience?

be heading for the vets now, has it been stood on or injured by other pups or mum? Read up on Ataxia not my breed but is a known issue

This is an american site on a quick look http://www.jrt-research.com/Ataxia.html best to head for the vets.

Couldn't find any recent research for jack Russells but there is a bit of research on finnish hounds out of Helsinki university. I can post it if your interested.

Has she managed pushing into the milkbar etc so far? I do find there is always one a little slower to get the old legs in order than the others, without seeing its hard to make a judgement though. I would be inclined not to be too concerned, 3 weeks is young and very early days in mobility for small breeds. If you are really concerned there is something wrong with her back end take her to the vets monday.

Quick update..... wobbly pup is still wobbly but has improved. A second pup has now started wobbling?!! Vets do not know what it is as in all other respects they are fit and healthy and littermates are unaffected? I am wondering whether any kind of deficiency could have this effect? Vets are suggesting the wait and see route which I am inclined to agree with - let hope they grow out of it or we will be keeping them :O

Vitamins to help are vit E,very useful for "swimmer" puppies,Vit C ,helps muscles strengthen and some supplementary balanced calcium /phosphorous like CollCalD in liquid form.

I have ordered some collo cal d to see if this helps. I am not aware of similar problems from either breeder of the pups parents (breeder of the mum is husbands uncle). Just hoping it isn't cerebellar ataxia :-(
