What monster vehicle would legally tow this please?

2.8 Diesel Jeep Cherokee - 3500kgs

If in doubt ask ROG
That is one good vehicle to blow the 85% thing completely out of the window because fully loaded it can only weigh 2520 kgs and yet can safely tow a weight of 3500 kgs

Too many of the old towing rules are not now relevant for many of the modern vehicles

For those that are concerned think about this ..... many LGVs can tow a higher weight than they can be simply because of the design and the same now goes for many B category vehicles

1k kg unladen and 2700 kg gross... I've been window shopping for trailers lately and have copious notes on my desk... :D

1.7 tonne isn't a mahoosive amount to play with for two biggies plus the hay, water and anything else that can't be thrown in the car...

If you are only going for a day everything else would fit into the car though, especially those mentioned. We have a swb nissan terrano (so not huge boot space .. I wanted a LWB mum felt intimidated by how long ;) ) and can take everything for a days eventing including 3 saddles for two horses in the car + two or three people.

Do agree with you Ester...:)

I just (annoyingly) have an elder daughter who doesn't drive so her and my grand daughter... Plus Mr Dragon and my youngest two still at home... So I guess if I start taking the rugrats' steeds somewhere to compete I'm going to have to take the whole gang too... I did think of parking them on the roof rack with some goggles generously supplied... :D

Nothing useful about specific cars to add, but just marvelling again at cultural differences between UK and NA...my instinct was still to say "get a pickup truck, you guys are nuts pulling big full trailers with 4x4s"! :D

:D:D:D

How much is gas in the UK now? ;)

LD I think that would be fair enough if they insist on coming, given that if sister does come (3rd body) she is a useful groom we feel it only fair to allow her a back seat..

I think these towing threads
will die out soon to be replaced with How many horses to pull my discovery now ive removed the engine and fitted shafts to the front:D seriouly our gubermint needs to address the fuel costs issue because soon very few people will be able to go out for the day and spend
we will just go to work and back home ...little else ..... High fuel is because of tax and high energy bills because we subsidise useless windmills, import natual gas and pay rich people too much for solar FIT...

Unfortunately so so true :(

Disco 3... Towed Richardson Rice Supreme Ultra with 2x 16hh, 3 people and tons of eventing gear happily through the mud at Aston today... Others had to be tractor-towed in and out!
Discos are the best!

Sadly, I'm getting to that stage :(

Have been researching here in Australia how to transport two big horses and now the idea of buying a float (horse trailer) big enough to hold two large horses and then a vehicle capable of pulling it is enough to make me want a two horse truck. The fact that they are almost non-existent here in Australia is irrelevant. I will just get one built. Although we can drive up to 4500kg on a car license, I will get my truck license as I will going for a truck with a GVM of 6-7000kg as I would rather some spare capacity and could easily add some accommodation to the truck so it can be registered as a campervan which is much cheaper.

I presume you are in the UK. Why don't you get one of those two horse trucks that I so long for?

LOL, a lot of the two horse trucks wont take two horses, they cant handle the weight. Perhaps two lightweight ponies. I wouldn't want to put my two cobs in one, even if it was legal.

You could do what I am going to do and get a truck license. Absolutely agree with you that I wouldn't put two horses in one of those 3500kg trucks. Heck I won't even do it with the limit of 4500kg that we have in Australia. For me it has to be at least a GVM of 6000kg or I won't consider it. 7000kg GVM would be better and what I'll probably get.

Diesel here in East Sussex is around 147.3p a litre :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Oh my Giddy Aunt! That sounds expensive. (about $2.30 Cdn)

Diesel today on average (more expensive than petrol) was $1.30 roughly 83p

...but, big but it makes no difference really whether it is cents or pence, there is still 100 to the dollar or pound, we pay out in dollars, you pay out in pounds.

I have a 1/2 Shire 1/2 TB - I would say he is around 700kg - 750kg too. Have an Ifor 510 which I think is 1.2 tonnes unladen, max of 2.8 tonnes. Have never towed with two quite as big as him, but frequently take a smaller one of up to 600kg. I tow with a Mercedes ML270 - which can tow the full 3.5 tonnes. I absolutely adore it, tows like a dream. You would be fine with any of the bigger 4x4s: Disco, ML, big Jeep, Landcruiser, LWB Shogun.

Personally, I would go for a vehicle that will tow 3.5 tonnes - I have always said that I wanted a bit of extra oomph, and you definitely don't want to find out it's not man enough going up or down a hill!!

(Also some of the other trailers don't have what I would call a big enough payload for a proper chunker like ours' - some of the Equitreks for example only have a 1300kg payload, and I wouldn't be happy towing my boy and another with that as I don't think it would be legal if you had much more than the horses on board.)

You could try one of these, GMC Sierra Dually (6l, V8) handy little trucks :) Bales average 1000lbs.
