I have a Springer X Border Collie called Rocky who is almost 12 years old.....Last weekend (when I was away) my dog went lame on one of his front feet... took him to the vet on the Tuesday morning and he admitted him to investigate... When I collected him later that morning he said he had an infected toe and just to be sure it wasnt broken had x rayed the foot... he found nothing so he gave my dog an injection of anti biotics and metacalm sent my dog home with antibiotics to be taken orally and to be started the next day... that night my dog was sick and was very quiet so I rang the vet the next day who asked me to bring him back which I did... he admitted him and put him on a drip... they also managed to get food in him and also the antiobiotics... by the end of the day he seemed so much brighter the vet suggested we take him home.. which we did... he was sick a couple of times at home ... I took him to work with me (as he always comes everywhere with me) and thats when he had his first nose bleed.. it was a lot of blood so I rang the vet and he asked me to bring him straight down... they redressed the toe to find that the toe adjacent had also swollen... it was decided to do a blood test and take a stool sample and that we would get the results by that evening.... so I took him to pick up my daughter from college and he was again sick a couple of times... rang the vet who said bring him down and on the way there he had another nose bleed... the vet admitted him straight away and put him on a drip.. last night the vet rang to say the blood results revealed liver disease and kidney problems... we discussed a blood transfusion... (for the platelets) and a scan to find out the cause... but this morning when the vet called he said he had bled a lot in the night - blood had gone into his gut and he was passing bloody diarreaoh...
We went down to see him this morning and he had gone down hill so much... after discussion his chances had slimmed to below 20% so even though the platelets would have bought him some time.... we decided to now have him at home with us (where he is at the moment) and the vet said to call him and he will do a home visit to put him to sleep...... but... I just cant get my head around the fact that he only went in with an infected toe..... what more can I do...?
