I have a Springer X Border Collie called Rocky who is almost 12 years old.....Last weekend (when I was away) my dog went lame on one of his front feet... took him to the vet on the Tuesday morning and he admitted him to investigate... When I collected him later that morning he said he had an infected toe and just to be sure it wasnt broken had x rayed the foot... he found nothing so he gave my dog an injection of anti biotics and metacalm sent my dog home with antibiotics to be taken orally and to be started the next day... that night my dog was sick and was very quiet so I rang the vet the next day who asked me to bring him back which I did... he admitted him and put him on a drip... they also managed to get food in him and also the antiobiotics... by the end of the day he seemed so much brighter the vet suggested we take him home.. which we did... he was sick a couple of times at home ... I took him to work with me (as he always comes everywhere with me) and thats when he had his first nose bleed.. it was a lot of blood so I rang the vet and he asked me to bring him straight down... they redressed the toe to find that the toe adjacent had also swollen... it was decided to do a blood test and take a stool sample and that we would get the results by that evening.... so I took him to pick up my daughter from college and he was again sick a couple of times... rang the vet who said bring him down and on the way there he had another nose bleed... the vet admitted him straight away and put him on a drip.. last night the vet rang to say the blood results revealed liver disease and kidney problems... we discussed a blood transfusion... (for the platelets) and a scan to find out the cause... but this morning when the vet called he said he had bled a lot in the night - blood had gone into his gut and he was passing bloody diarreaoh...

We went down to see him this morning and he had gone down hill so much... after discussion his chances had slimmed to below 20% so even though the platelets would have bought him some time.... we decided to now have him at home with us (where he is at the moment) and the vet said to call him and he will do a home visit to put him to sleep...... but... I just cant get my head around the fact that he only went in with an infected toe..... what more can I do...?

Oh you poor thing. But better you are prepared and that you got him to a vet in time rather than he went through all that at home with you in a panic.

My girl went downhill rapidly in a very similar fashion, she went off her food and didn't want to walk one day - from doing two hour yomps and being in fab condition - and she was gone two days later - she had a massive tumour on her spleen and we simply had no idea, until the last she showed no outward signs.

Just be there for him. If he is telling you it is time to go, be there for him and comfort him and what a nice vet to be able to come out to you.
If you think he can fight it - go for it, but look in his eyes and have a think about whether he can go on much longer.

Massive hugs for you and cuddles for your boy whatever happens xxx

So sorry. Can't really offer any advice, the infected toe could be a total coincidence. As CC says, sometimes they go down hill so quickly when the system starts to fail. Thinking of you.

Huge (((hugs))) for you

I was the same when I lost my lurcher in December 2008 - he only had diarrhoea, but it just wouldnt clear up, he ended up being PTS approx 2 weeks later with carcinoma of the gut

It is so hard when you think it is nothing that serious, but sometimes things just escalate quite unexpectedly - you sound to have done absolutely everything you can

One of my late bitches was a little more than 12 years when we went to a quite big dog show, she became best veteran in her breed and between one and two weeks later we went to the veterinarian clinic because she had coughed so strangely a few times the evening before. It might sound exaggerated, to go to the vets for a few strange coughs but some days earlier she had been somewhat tired (very out of character for her), she had perked up again but when we heard those coughs, there was just something about them that made us want to check her up to be on the safe side, none of us could imagine what the vet would find.

She had a tumour that was growing out from the heart and it had begun to squeeze around her windpipe, she had probably coughed because she felt some pressure around her windpipe and the tumour was simply and slowly beginning to suffocate her. She was euthanized then and there, while eating some treats. It took me days before I could grasp that my wonderful Humla was gone due to something that I had thought was, though strangely sounding, still only a simple cough.

So I have lots of sympathy for you, that within days have gone from having a dog with a lame leg due to an infected toe, to maybe needing to say goodbye to him.

Well.... our vet has been absolutely brilliant rang yesterday and this morning for an update on Rocky....I told him that last night Rocky was peaceful although had us up at 2.30 am for a wee and again at around 5.30am to be sick but other than that... quiet as you would expect... he had been drinking water but not always keeping it down... but he had stopped bleeding....

So our vet rang again tonight for an update and after discussion we asked us to take him back... he has cleaned up and re dressed the toe, he is back on a drip to re hydrate him, will have a jab of anti biotics and vitamin B12 and then he is intending to re do his blood test in the morning once he is hydrated... and then possibly a scan.....

So watch this space... I have everything crossed....

Glad to hear your boy is on the up..

I had my Little Bean put to sleep two weeks ago tonight. From
being the dog he was to a little vomitting on the Sunday, he went rapidly downhill from 3 till 6 on the Monday morning. He spent the day at the vets (whom he hated with a passion) but I think I already knew that morning the outcome, and after a discussion with the vet who said they could give him intense treatment for the next week and he still may not come through I knew it was time to let him go. I spent an hour and a half just cuddling him that night and then stayed with him and did the hardest thing I have ever had to do. He was about 13 and I'd had him for 7 years or so but he was one of the truly special ones who grab your heart and dont let go..

Its with a very heavy heart that I write this... unfortunately the blood test results showed the same results for the liver but much worse for his kidneys... the scan done this morning has confirmed that he has Liver cancer... so tonight we have collected him back from the vet and he is again home with us... he is now sleeping ... but I will do what is right for him when he tells me he has had enough which could be at anytime....I will by his side as he has been for me.....

Further to my earlier post so sorry to hear this, you just have to be with him when he goes now. There is nothing to say right now and I understand how it feels....
