What MPG do you get from your 4x4?

Looking to upgrade little car (which is currently only averaging 36-38mpg!!!) for a 4x4 so I can tow...

At the moment I'm looking at the Hyundai Terracan as this supposedly does approx 32/33mpg (combined). I'd hoped it wouldn't be a hugely important factor but new job is about 20miles down the M5 away so as I will be clocking up 50-60miles per day the better the MPG the happier and less bankrupt I'll be!!

Looking to spend £8-10K....

So what do you have and what MPG does it give you?

*Note: I will not consider a LPG conversion before anyone suggests it.
 
I've got Nissan X-trail, when it was new I would get just over 40 miles from a gallon, nowadays, with 135K on the clock (half of it towing) and general tiredness, it does about 30ish on it's own and about 25 when towing.
 
Unfortunately I *think* the X-trial lacks the required towing capacity :( Please correct me if I'm wrong though :)

Not looked at the Fourtrak but that mpg doesn't sound too bad.
 
35 - 40mpg from a 200tdi Disco. It is an old car but the most economical Landy you can get. Why they are so hard to get hold of.

They are a bit old though.

Sorry. What am I saying? a Landy is never old :)
 
I've recently bought a 10 year old Disco - does about 35ish on own (& I only have a short stop/start journey to work of 7 miles), 25 ish towing Rice trailer & chunky sec D !! (Only does less when I forget & think it's a sports car lol).

4X4s that will tow safely do about 30 mpg if you drive gently and will drink fuel if you drive over about 65 on the motorway, the key to getting the best economy is keep them well maintained oil changes and filters and tyre presures and on the motorway follow a truck steadly at 56 mph ... I would seriouly consider a small diesel hatch back fiesta , punto,clio
which will do 60 +mpg cost £30 ish for tax and cheap for sevice and tyres
and get a old 4x4 for towing or a lorry ....otherwise you will be putting the best part of £100 in fuel per week!!!
 
Toyota Surf 3.0TD Auto. 20-25mpg. 25 on a long motorway run, sitting at 70 all the way. 22 on an average week of going to the yard (shortish journey, lots of starts and stops). 20 if I press the ECT button and drive with a heavy right foot.

It is old though (94), and I would guess the newer models are a bit more economical. Oh, and it's HUGE (it's basically a 5 door estate version of a Hilux pick up), so heavier than most of those mentioned above.
 
I love the fourtrak, wouldn't go back to a disco again! The disco didn't tow nearly so well, and rusted soooo quickly. The fourtrak is more efficient (and I'm towing a trailer that weighs 1250kg empty, plus at least one 650kg horse!) and more stable.

Mine is P reg, but has less than 100k miles on it, and had never towed until we bought it.
 
I had a pajero 2.8td and was lucky to get 25mpg on a normal drive and about 20mpg when towing. i know use a Nissan Navara Aventura double cab for towing it has had the engine chipped at a cost of £1500k but we get over 40mpg when towing our 511.

I did look at the nissan xtrail and it was not able to tow a 510 or 511 by the way.
 
Love my Fourtrak - worked it all out properly and get *eek* 28mpg that was on a full tank with 2 short tows included. It does only go 70mph when wind in the right direction so not great for comuting on motorways!! For your budget I would look at a Sorento - 40mpg+ and Shogun SWB but 30 ish mpg (because I love them and having one soon!)
 
I'm actually not sure!!!

I have a Mitsibushi Shogun Sport, 2.5 TDi, 5 years old on 60,000 - It costs about £65 to fill a complete tank and does about 300 miles on that
 
Daihatsu fourtrack 2.8td I get 27 - 30 mpg on short local trips to yard and back etc, it's a bit better on a long run, but goes down to about 22mpg towing - soon upgrading to 3.1td trooper, so not sure what that'll do...
 
have a Range Rover Sport.......lets jut say you'd need a small cheap to run car along side it or a generous husband that'll pay for your fuel! Having said that I wouldn't have anything else - i love it!
