It’s 4 weeks since Red pranged herself having a massive hooley in the field. Post pranging she was shuffling behind and quite sore in back (lumbar region). Vet came week before last (physio had been before that) as whilst she’d improved a lot she still wasnt right. Shuffle gone and tracking well in trot (right rein better) but left canter looked odd (like she couldn’t push through). Post vet work up we’re treating her for soft tissue injury in the back. Work up included lameness locator and this indicated no lameness in hinds (passed flexion test). She had a very slight indicator on left hind but vet clear it was negligible and had been there when we’d used the locator about 18 months ago to diagnose an issue with fronts. So on 2 bute a day and Robaxin (that only arrived Wednesday). She’s also having a back masssge pad daily (it doesn’t reach sore area but she seems to enjoy it!). Vet wants me to keep her moving to try and loosen back - lunged lightly this morning and she is better (foot perfect on right rein and moving beautifully incl in canter) but left rein definitely still not right. She’s improved, better hind leg action but I’m aware she’s on a good dose of meds. She’s also still sore in lumbar region but it is just on right side and is less acute. Physio back out tomorrow and vet back out Fri (if no improvement). I then have to decide whether I x-Ray the back and/or I can investigate the left hind. She’s bright and chirpy in herself, has a massive roll on turnout (no issues there and I watch her closely). Sorry very long post just not sure to go for full blown investigation or wait - Vet advised she might need a good break from ridden work but I should keep her active etc.

I say it a lot, but I'd want a vet osteo out ASAP. I've used Tom Beech and Rob Jackson both of whom are brilliant. If they cant fix it they will tell you, but they fixed mine twice when he was written off. They are my go to now before I start investigations.

Thanks - I looked up Rob Jackson last week. Given he treats horses all over - does he come to you or do you go to a clinic?

time and the vet/physio recommended exercise. if you hurt yourself it often takes 6 weeks to settle

True and it’s the last niggle that takes the longest. She is better but I’d hoped for more improvement given the Bute and Robaxin. We’ll be going walkies as of this week - more interesting than lunging all the time!

We’re staffs so it might be one to look into for new year if she’s still not right end of this week. Both my physio and vet know her well (vet as she had issue with fronts not long after I bought her).

It depends on the likelihood of investigation changing the treatment plan for me. If, whatever you find out, the treatment is likely to stay the same then there's not much point investigating. If finding out more might mean doing something drastically different and the chances of that bring the case arent small then if might be worth further investigation. But you have a symptom you can observe and you have a treatment plan and you have time. I think I'd be going with waiting and seeing in your case. Stuff can take a long time to heal.

Its just the not knowing - although i guess i do have more than a fair idea given shes still reacting to pressure toward lumbar region. I dont insure so time isnt an issue (vet woukd have xrayed back if i had insurance as 12 month click wouls have already started). Ironic really, i’d just decided not to give her a break this winter!
