What non horsey thing/remedy/cream do you swear by to use for your horsey?

Okay I always like to use sudacrem or savlon for cuts and grazes; cheap as chips but does the job!

I also like to use a dollop of sunflower oil in the feed to give a nice shiny coat


So, whats your non horsey items that you like to use??
 
Avon Skin So Soft as midge repellent, Pig Oil and Sulfur for Mud Fever, diluted Cider Vinegar for putting a shine on dark horses after a bath and my friend swears by strong cold tea for stopping horses with sweet itch itching :) xx
 
my hors is illergic to sudocrem and savlon cream so i used the savlon spray for cuts and it really does the job although it only lasts me 2 days lol ... sunflower oils good to :)
 
I use tea bags (dunked in hot water, squeezed out and left to cool a little) for runny eyes, and nappies for dry poulticing (I think quite a few people use those!) plus Sudocrem for grazes and suchlike.
 
Aloe Vera - both as a topical gel for wounds and a 'juice' in feed for general well-being and arthritis supplement. Cider vinegar for arthritis aid too. Sudocream for cuts/grazes. Vaseline as a barrier against the wet and mud for legs. Cold tea - topically to help with eyes and in feed as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory for puffy/swollen legs. Rescue remedy in water and feed, as a calmer. I'm another one that uses nappies as poultices too.

ETA: I also use Aussie Miracle leave in conditioning spray on manes and tails. I've also used hydrogen peroxide to help treat thrush & bicarbonate soda, again in feeds - to help neutralise acidity in stomachs.

Right, I am going to sound completely stupid but how do you do the nappy and poulticing? Does anyone have pics?

That I can recall off the top of my head:

Zinc Oxide
Banana Boat Factor 60 sunblock
Nappies for poultices
Panty liners for wound dressings
Hydrogen peroxide for washing out wounds
 
Optrex eye ointment for infected eyes - always have to lie through my teeth to pharmacist that it's for my husband and give all the symptoms. They won't sell if its for an animal.;)
 
Sudocrem as suncream.
Pig oil and sulphur to prevent mud fever.
Nappies as dry poultice.
Flamazine if they get mud fever.
Frontline for feather mites.
 
Ha ha, I forgot about the panty liners! With regards to nappies as dry poultices, I just position hoof in middle of opened-out nappy, with the back of the nappy at the back of the leg, pull the nappy up and wrap the front round the front of the leg, using the stick-together fasteners to hold it on. Our pony has new-born size (small hoofs!) Then we wrap in black tape. Works a treat and saves lots of fiddling around!
 
Johnsons Baby Oil for cracks, dry skin, itchy heel etc etc
Cold tea (from tea made with tea leaves as opposed to bags if possible) in feed for a horse in poor condition, or as an eye bath
Sudocrem for small wounds, insect bites etc

Ooh I have never heard of using nappies, pig oil and sulpher. Ooh I also love vaseline as a barrier to keep mud fever at bay, saves a fortune. And I use the cold tea bags for wheepy eyes. I also know someone who uses toothpaste to encourage her horse to accept the bit. Love the panty liner idea!
 
Another one for Avon Skin So Soft, benzyl benzoate for skin conditions including sweet itch, hydrogen peroxide, witch hazel to promote hair growth and harden skin, vaseline, sudocrem, used to be able to get formaldehyde for thrush but can't get it any more.

dripping on cornet band to stop cracking hooves

alo vera can help on sarcoids - worked on my friends dale mare

bad eyes? - always used golden eye

and iv discovered that johnsons baby no more tear shampoo is reasonably good on grey horses -- i will prove to u in the pics to follow tomorrow

vaseline for stopping build up of snow in feet in the winter

cobbysmum, If you have a farmer you know who has sheep, you will be able to get formaldehyde from him. It is great for seedy toe.

I tried the mr sheen idea but just found it made her tail sticky and it felt horrible so went back to the horsey stuff.
 
Dettol one big blob in a bucket of water good for rinsing off,keeps the flies away...and others lol

Use udder cream as well working wonders on dry and sore skin.
 
Baby wipes - much cheaper han under the tail wipes etc. and work just as well.
Sudocrem - good for sores, cuts, sunburn etc.
Baby/childs factor 50 suncream
 
Like courage_uk I use Golden Eye ointment for gungey eyes in the summer.
Johnsons Baby wipes for cleaning muzzle and nostrils.
Head and Shoulders for washing a scurfy/itchy tail.
