Hi all,

As in the title really- I want to take my horse to the beach on Sunday 4th aug- any ideas what beach I can take him too?

Thanks!

Holkham is the popular choice - but please get there really early as it gets full of small people and large who know nothing about how a horse might react if you kick a large beachball in its direction. I think - Lolo will know - Horsebox parking is £15. Near Hunstanton you have Holme Next The Sea which is not a hugely busy beach but you won't be able to get a horsebox through the carpark gates although you could possibly get a trailer through. You could also go to Burnham Overy Staithe and park in any of the little areas near there. However, it's a longish (1.25 miles) ride to the beach and the gates down the path are not always open. I don't know about Brancaster, sorry.

Edited to add this: http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/PeddarsWay/uploads/Horse Riding information sheet v4(2).pdf - it has info about Holme on it.

Holkham, without a second thought! Providing that the tide's out then you can go for a serious blast, or a proper swim, if you want. It's glorious! We live about 4 miles away, and though I'll admit that we tend to stay away at the likely peak times, we've never really noticed that the beach is crowded. From the edge of the dunes, to the water's edge is a good half mile, with miles of frontage.

Holkham Estate don't own the beach, that's the property of the Crown, but they do own Lady Anne Drive, which is the access road, and they know how to charge, whilst offering no input. There's a sort of meter thing, and it's one which doesn't take notes, so be prepared to take £15 in pound coins. Apart from the fact that Holkham are conning people in to charging them to use a public facility, it's a lovely and unspoiled place.

Alec.

Brancaster beach rivals Holkham Beach.

Parking in the carpark by the beach is cheaper (£4 per car - so you might be looking at £8 for a car and trailer, or lorry.
There are clean public toilets alongside the carpark
And a brilliant snack bar: http://www.brancasterbeachkiosk.co.uk

Watch the road from Brancaster out to Brancaster beach can be flooded at some high tides!
