Hello all,

This should possibly be in the competition section but I wasn't sure so decided to stick it in here...

I have a few questions about showing and dressage etc and the various fashion foibles of each.
Please forgive my ignorance but it's been a long time since I was competing regularly and even then it was in bog standard PC uniform!

1. In what classes should you wear a coloured browband? Riding Horse and Riding
Club Horse or just Riding Horse? I know it’s not for hunter/WHP etc

2. Should white gloves actually be used in Dressage? No-one actually seems to in the local things I've been to… or are we just not good enough lol

3. In showing, if wearing a grey/navy tweed jacket in showing classes can brown leather gloves and brown show cane be used? Have only seen this with the greeny tweeds so far but I’ve got blue tweed and not buying another one!
Have got nice brown tack too so that's all sorted

4. Do you have to use dummy spurs in a Small Hunter/WHP class or are they optional?

5. What classes are you supposed to use a double bridle for? What if you don’t? April's got one but don’t really use it… was thinking of getting lessons with it as she's working well in a snaffle. I know it’s not for Stressage at my level lol!

6. When should a tail be pulled, trimmed not plaited. Is it plaited for dressage? There was a post earlier where people said not to for dressage, but maybe that was just for the cob in question or is it for all?

And lastly have I got it right for these classes:

Tweed Jacket, Shirt & Tie –
Riding Horse
Riding Club Horse
Small Hunter
WHP

Navy Jacket -
Dressage
Show Jumping

Any help would be most appreciated

I'm not a serious competitor by any means but it would be nice to know these things and blend in!

I only know a few of these...

THe BD rule book just says that gloves must be worn & doesn't state a colour. Like you, I always thought it should be white, but seeing that no-one else wore white, I eventually looked it up.

Tail - once you've pulled it, you won't be able to plait it til it grows out. Either is fine for dr.

Yeah I think so, I think you can show jump in pink fluff and diamante if that's your particular bag.
Showing is where it becomes more prescriptive and confusing (well at least to me)!

1. In what classes should you wear a coloured browband? Riding Horse and Riding
Club Horse or just Riding Horse? I know it’s not for hunter/WHP etc

Coloured browbands are correct for Riding Horses ahd hacks (riding club don't have set rules, although I always used to do it in a plain leather one). Definitely not brass or anything like that.

2. Should white gloves actually be used in Dressage? No-one actually seems to in the local things I've been to… or are we just not good enough lol

I don't believe it is "law" to have white gloves for dressage any more.

3. In showing, if wearing a grey/navy tweed jacket in showing classes can brown leather gloves and brown show cane be used? Have only seen this with the greeny tweeds so far but I’ve got blue tweed and not buying another one!

It is correct to use any brown coloured gloves (including beige, mustardy etc). Dark brown look the best as they do not draw attentionto the hands. They like white one in dressage for just that reason! Brown cane is perfect.

4. Do you have to use dummy spurs in a Small Hunter/WHP class or are they optional?

It is correct to wear spurs in a small hunter class. You can wear dummy spurs if your horse does not like proper spurs. WHP (working hunter pony) classes are usually BSPS or PUK - you cannot wear spurs in any pony classes. If you are doing working hunter, then spurs are correct. Spurs are correct in all adult classes apart from some coloured classes and M&Ms.

5. What classes are you supposed to use a double bridle for? What if you don’t? April's got one but don’t really use it… was thinking of getting lessons with it as she's working well in a snaffle. I know it’s not for Stressage at my level lol!

Any affiliated showing class for adults - including novices, can be done in a double or pelham bridle. Novices can also be ridden in a snaffle. Riding club is down to the judge/schedule. You can use a double bridle from Elementary upwards.

6. When should a tail be pulled, trimmed not plaited. Is it plaited for dressage? There was a post earlier where people said not to for dressage, but maybe that was just for the cob in question or is it for all?

A tail should always be pulled and trimmed for adult affiliated showing classes apart from some coloured classes, arabs etc and M&Ms. For dressage the fashion is long tails - sometimes pulled and sometimes plaited. I always think the long tails unbalance the look of the horse, but I am sure that dressage people thinkthe shorter showing tails look equally horrid!!!

That's wonderful help FMM thank you so much

I have actually seen your name being referred to in showing matters and was hoping you would be about!
