H+H, page 13, top right in eventing box,

BE sports manager Debbie Marfell explained: 'Riders said they got nothing for a win at BE 90 or BE 100, so we have created foundation points'

Que?

They have brought out a points system, like the one already there at Novice and above bt these are awarded below novice. And therefore are not the same as current BE points

I know ...stupid idea!

They don't count for anything either, just to help sell your horse!

I'm a grassroots rider myself and I think it is a rubbish idea...
Do you get them the same as Novice? ie 1 point for a double clear and 6,5,4,3,2 for top 5 places? Or just a point for a win?

is it just me or is this going to confuse people?

i.e. looking at adverts and dismissing horses as they have 'points'

if they wanted a system why didn't they create a level of awards such as Bronze (horses with between 1-5 top ten finishes), Silver(6-15 top 10finishes) and Gold (11+) as an example? a bit pointless but then they'd answer the complaints

BE really makes me laugh sometimes

langside, i agree with you!
there are already enough people who exaggerate what their horse has won (friend of mine is an equine therapist and often has people say "oh, he's an Advanced eventer" and when she checks he's got about 5 points if he's lucky...!)
now it'll be "he's got x points" but on investigation they won't be 'real' points...!
if they wanted to do this, they should have upped points for all levels, so maybe 6 for an Intro win. 12 for a BE(100) win, 24 for an N win, etc etc.
first horse to a million points, anyone?!?!

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan and that's from a BE90/100 rider who may never do Novice and get a proper point! Fair enough perhaps for the membership fee you should get something more than a rosette but then the whole system needs changed rather than having a mix match are we going to have horses with 36 points; 12 proper and 24 foundation?

However, there is no advantage to a horse competing at BE 90 and BE 100 to lie about the number of their points being 'real' as that would make them inelible for these classes. I do not think that points will be confused frequently, yes when people are getting use to the new system but not in the long run. It would be easy to check on BE how many points a horse had which inevitably if someone was buying a horse with BE experience, they would do anyway. That is the advantage of running at an affiliated event.

The system also cannot be universal as effectively a Novice horse would have the same 'experience' as an intro horse, resulting in novice horses competing in BE classes.

:-)

Actually i disagree that its pointless..... The lower levels of eventing are crammed full.

Why not have a small award of merit? Some people never want to go further than pre novice.

Its a bit like when intro and training classes came out.... When in hindsite look how popular they have become!

but Pilfer is never going to go beyond PN and i still don't need him to have points.

i still think it will be confusing, particularly if a horse is advertised for sale as having points.

some may not ring as think it will have to do Open classes, some may ring up thinking the horse would be a good Novice schoolmaster etc etc.

why can't people just be happy with a rosette?
i am always ecstatic about being placed, but perhaps i am more easily pleased than others??

I dont think points are needed at intro +pn level. But I think BE are doing this to try and quieten down the argument about prizes at these levels. They vary hugely between events, and also within events. I was a BE90 at Stafford last year and won a £50 voucher and a really nice leather headcoller. 2 weeks later I won a BE90 at richmond and got a saddle cloth that's RRP is £12.99!!!!!!! The annoying thing about this was the winner of the other BE90 section won a John Whittaker Bridle (RRP around £100). I asked the secretary why this was and they said the sponsors for each section chose the prizes, and it is up to them how much they spend, so it is nothing to do with the event. BE in this economic climate do not want to risk loosing sponsors, by enforcing a prizes rule, so think this will satisfy the riders instead. IMO it doesn't, if i've spent over £70 to enter and get to an event, I expect to get a prize that is a minimum £70 monetary value if I win, the last thing I want is for BE to waste their time and Money on foundation points!!!!!!!!!!

Personally dont like the idea but then i didn't like the idea of getting points at novice for a DC either.
