Don't know about that item, but hav a frend who has a hoof from her long dead hunter, with a silver plated shoe on it. I have to say I have always found it a little creepy

Yes, plenty of hooves... and occasionally whole horses stuffed...

What would one do with these though?

Could they be some kind of custom made armour (fetlock boot) type of affair?

They do look more like armour than presevation boxes!
If you go to the national racing museum in newmarket, you can see all the stuffed heads of the greats and their hoofs in the cases. It is abit creepy but cool to!

I think they are just protective fetlock boots, as in the sort of thing you would see in armour.

boots! the description says boots! it took me 5 mins and OH pointing it out to see it.. as I was twisting my head in horror to see what the shape was.

I'll bet it has something to do with parade stuff.
