I have two Shetland mares. At the moment they are 2 and 3 yrs old.
In time I would like to breed from them but where I am in Canada there are no Shetland stallions.

What other breeds could I consider for them?
They are not miniatures they are standard size around 40 inches

Any sugestions?

You could look into breeding to a small Appaloosa and the foals might be able to be registered as Pony of the Americas if the stallion and mares conform. Or alternatively you may find a POA stallion to breed your mares to.

Thanks for the replies.

I have found a couple of Canadian and American stallion websites.
some of the stud farms will send frozen semen.

My mares will not grow to more than 41 or 42 inches.

How big a pony can I breed them to?

Christiamas how small an appaloosa were you thinking? I didn't know you could get particularly little ones.

Mind you on these stallion web sites I came across quarter ponies! rather than horses. They looked quite nice.

Oh there's quite a lot of little Appaloosa ponies; 13hhs; around my way. I don't know of any Appaloosa pony stallions mind you.

I love Quarter ponies - they are really cute - I think I will have one as one of our foals looks like he is going to be a tiddler.

I don't know about breeding Shetlands - if it wasn't for POA's I'd have said there wasn't much to breed to them other than other small breed ponies; but hey they did it with the Appy's so I guess it is okay. I don't know if I'd want to breed a Shettie to anything too big.

I bred our little 12.2hh Connemara mare to my 15hh APHA stallion and we have a lovely little foal out of them. Not sure how big the filly will be but she is certainly going to be bigger than her Mum but smaller than her Dad; I'd think about 13.2hh.

If you have found Shettie stallions who will ship, then that's the way I'd go to be honest.

I have found everything but Shettie stallions.

There are north American Shetlands but they are a different breed.
Much finer, bred with small thoroughbreds way back.

I am very keen on the quarter pony idea though so I will research them a bit more.
I am in no rush as my girls are still young.

I really must phone the Shetland stud book society as they may be able to help out with info about whether I could import semen from the UK.

the_witch - are you thinking of the one in the US that's eventing? I believe he is part American shetland, which are different to our shetlands, looking more like hackney ponies

No this one is in the UK, was an 'accident', but has turned out to be a nice pony.

for something nice I would consider a small finely bred show pony type (12hh or so) if I wanted to make a childs pony - but when breeding you have to consider first what exactly it is that you want to produce as an end result, and then find the stallion that can contribute to bits that are missing from your mare

Thank you witch

If I can't find a "real" Shetland I would like to breed a childs riding pony.
something bigger than my Shetlands.
A nice little utility pony. Strong but not too stocky.
That is why I was thinking the quarter pony input would be good.
