What payload would be needed for one horse?

Looking into a 3.5tonne horsebox for me to travel my one horse (16.1hh 3/4 draught so I’d estimate 700kg) and max two passengers.

Not sure how much tack, fuel etc would add to the load. Would 900kg be enough?

Thanks!

My lorry chap says that IF you are stopped and weighed (or have an accident and it is enforced - i have known this, not to myself) - they allow 10%. I wouldn't rely on it in your calculations but worth knowing. That is on the total vehicle weight so on a 3.5 tonne truck it would actually give you about 3.8...

2 passengers, lunch, drinks, allow 150kg
Water container, minimum 10 litres, another 10kg (I took at least 30 litres in summer)
2 nets, likely around 20kg
Tack, spares, riding kit, grooming kit, 50kg.
As mentioned above, each litre of fuel = 1kg

Then, was it weighed with spare wheel, jack, partition etc?
So if my maths is right… minimum 1000kg needed?

A bare minimum tbh.

My last box was 980 fuelled right up, with 20litre full water container, inc spare wheel, partition etc all in.
Please do get box and then horse weighed, then you can add all the rest by weighing on scales yourself 1st.
Remember, we all leave clutter in boxes (spare kit, boots, coats etc) and this will all add up.

Makes you wonder how safe most of the boxes on the road are! Would love to have a dedicated vehicle rather than charging my car to a Jeep + trailer but maybe not feasible 🥲

I got mine weighed. It weighed 2540 leaving me with 960. My horse (weighed) is 700 kg. She's ISH x WB & 17.1-17.2. I only ever take saddle, bridle, water, small hay net with me & I weigh 50kg clothed and I would only ever take this horse by herself. My ponies weigh 248 kg & 300 kg so I would take them together but nothing else with my sports horse. It was weighed with all the normal odds n ends and hay in it, but not tack. I think I'm okay as long as I don't take any large passengers with me.
