I have bought most horses cash and one by bank transfer from Ireland.

I was wondering how people prefer to be paid when selling a horse. I should imagine cheque is a bit dodgy, but what about cash or bank draft?

Since Nov. 2007, once a cheque has cleared (six days) the money can't be recalled, unlike in the past when supposedly cleared cheques could be recalled months later. Before that, I would only accept cash or electronic transfer. Now, I would be happier about accepting a cleared cheque.

If it has to be a cheque it has to be well cleared before they are able to collect.
A bank transfer is good too as is a building society cheque as you know if the money wasn't in their account, the BS wouldn't allow it and it will be immediately (as soon as it is written) taken from their account.
Still think cash is best but I have a tendency to squander it if I don't bank it!

Whatever is used, I always make sure my receipts have carbon copies with every little thing noted, all dots dotted and t's crossed to be on the safe side and signed and dated by both the buyer and me.

Don't think for a moment that a Building Society Cheque is like cash.... there are thousands of stolen or counterfeit building society cheques out there. Treat them as any other cheque & wait for them to clear.

iv always paid cash for mine, but when i sold my youngster the new owners were a little short of cash so much to my horror my dad suggested they pay most of the money then pay £100 for the next 7 months! however the family were very honest and we got all of the money on time.

People must trust me! Have bought the last two from the same person and paid by cheque at the same time as I picked the horse up!
