What piece of tack did I see and why

Today I was driving through our village and saw two riders on very skittish, very beautiful horses like Pasa Fino/Andulsian/Arab, I mean really beautiful and kind of out of place, the riders were dressed like something out of a Spagetti Western movie and the horses had this piece of tack that held there heads sort of down it was connected somewhere at the chin and tied between the front legs, it look really painful and uncomfortable they could not lift their heads to see where they were going. It made me sad, does anyone know what this is. It was not a martingale by the way it was just one piece heavy duty strap.

Ok having read the description and the difference between a standing martingale and a tie down, then it must have been a tie down because there was not a neck strap attached, just a single strap from a to b. Thanks for the link
 
It was possibly a tie down :) Like this?

Noseband has a ring attached. The tie down strap has clips at both ends and a buckle in the middle for adjustments.

Yep that was it, but that horse looks comfortable, these horses almost had their chins touching their necks. Thanks for the link

Don't get me wrong I love western tack and riding gear, I would actually love to go western but not sure about the saddle fitting etc, so I tend to stick with English. These guys looked like they were going to have a lot of fun, sadly not the horses

No worries, the comment was just tongue in cheek, no offence intended.

I doubt that is the case here but photos might change my mind ;) Tie downs are not usually particularly tight and the breeds of horses guessed at by OP are the type to hold their head carriage unlike 'regular' horses.
