Looks like it's going to freeze here Thursday with snow forecast for the weekend. I've just gone out to buy some more rocksalt for the yard.

I'll also be filling water containers in case the pipes freeze, they're lagged but do occasionally freeze.

So now I'm prepared you can bet the cold spell won't last long!

i dont think we will be getting snow, but if its forecast then i make sure iv got plently of feed (always make sure iv got an extra 2week supply), lots of bedding and luckily we have a barn of hay!

:)

we have our barn stocked with hay & straw and haylage, enough to last about 6months! But we just make sure we have plenty of feed in altho tend to order in bulk in winter so its usually ok. Water is main issue but YO house is on yard so we can use her taps if yard water freezes!!

I make sure I have extra feed/haylage/shavings etc in case I cant get out, or deliveries cant get through to my local supplier.

I fill jerry cans and buckets, as the yard tap always freezes.

I dig out my thermals and make sure I have plenty of tea bags and biscuits! :D

Ive stocked up on bedding, hay and feed this year! hopefully get me through to january.....

also, just incase I do get stranded and cant physically get to the yard, I make sure a list is up in my feedshed of what my horses have in their feeds so that if I cant get there, the staff know exactly who gets what.

I also make sure I have spare set of clothes/boots/thick coat at the yard incase I get drenched or something and need to get out of icy cold clothes!

I make sure I have my mobile charged up so can call other owner and do her horses for her as im only 0.5miles away and shes about 10mins but on back roads which are never gritted.

Make sure I have plenty of food for horses. Just been working out when to get next hay delivery as they wont delivery between xmas and new year so need to ensure time it right to get one before they stop delivering for the year.

Just need to find my neck warmer and dig out overtrousers and good to go!!

Bring it on. -4 by thurs night so may have to move water buckets inside and wrap in straw.

im lucky - my yo worries about all this - when water freezes he provides churns of water for us - he provides all our hay and haylage, straw, shavings etc so we have never run out - i just have to make sure i have plenty of hard feed in xxx

Hay - check
Feed - check
Axe to break ice in trough - check
Several woolly hats and pairs of gloves - check
Wellies that don't leak yet - check!!

I can walk to the field so if car can't get out no problem, even have the sledge in the garage so can sled down the road!!! lol

Last year, when we got snowed in for ages, we found that we had everything that we needed for the horses and other animals, but it was us that started running out of food! The other big problem we had was that the house bins weren't emptied for two months!

Log fire, nice bottle of red

and send the daughter out to see to the horses!

I'm going to get some more shavings and feed on thursday, and have a round bale of hay which will last a while :D Horse will be all snug :D Luckily we're on a big yard so shouldn't be so bad. If it does snow and ground is hard then YO will want all horses to stay in! Luckily my boy's ok stabled.

Last winter when we had a cold snap, we covered outside stand pipes with a plastic bag of straw as well as lagging. That kept them flowing.

Oh yeah, you have 'proper' weather! Four flakes of snow and we grind to a halt here!!

Last year I had less snow than parts of the UK:) and we haven't had any at all worth mentioning this year yet. Even our temperatures are warm still, not gone under -5C, 14C a couple of days ago ! Crazy.

No, we don't grind to a halt.
We do a lot more for ourselves though, is it legal to drive with a plow on the front of your truck in the UK? It is quite normal here.

Nothing much is legal in the UK these days :-) so probably not!!

nag dad to fix the landrover so we can get to the yard if it snows ;)
YO has sorted out another water supply from inside a barn for if the outside one freezes and only tip water down the drains so it dosent freeze on the yard not looking forward to it if it does snow as when it snowed last year I didnt have my own so I could enjoy it much more

We have plenty of hay and food and we have ordered extra cosy rugs (just waiting for last one to arrive off of ebay). For myself I have bought some cosy snowboots. :D Also put winter jods, riding gloves and thermal socks on my Amazon wishlist in the hopes that I will get these items for Christmas.

feed bins full, rugs all mended, plenty of bedding case they really need to come in (mainly the cob to defrost his feathers!).
Spade, warm hat, big bar of chocolate and a blanket in the car in case I get stuck. Will let air out of the tyres when the ice comes.
