What products work best for cribbing

I have moved yards and although the horses have settled really well one of them occassionally bites the wooden posts.We had barbed wire at old yard so I used electric tape and didnt know he would crib.He only does it if hes on his own or Im a bit late and he wants to come in .The first week he was anxious and did it more but hardly touches it most days,it happens around the the gate area.
Does crib off or similiar products work.
 
I have heard crib biting is caused by excess acid in the stomach, like acid reflux in humans. So you could try an acid ease product, protexin do a acid one, that may keep the acid at lower levels, as by the sounds of it it builds up and causes him to crib when he is hungry or stressing. Or you could just give him Gaviscon! LOL! hope this helps.
 
I've got one who cribs when he first comes in - have used the NAF spray on crib stuff (can't remember its proper name sorry) and it does seem to have cut it down, although to be honest he is new and has previously been on 2 competition yards so is settling in to a more relaxed environment which may also be helping! If you go for the spray (it was the only one in the shop and it was an emergency - have used gels previously) don't breathe it in as it tastes disgusting and takes all day to get rid of it - I stopped cribbing almost immediately!!
 
lol sounds like the one I need to buy then.I have been pouring fairy liquid on fence for couple of days not ideal but I thought a couple of tastes would put him off.If it smells really bad then he probably wont even try to chew Ill see if I can get hold of it.Thanks
 
I think its anxiety with the new yard and no grass.I am putting plenty of hay in the field to keep him occuppied he is on field rest so is probably bored stiff.Ill keep gaviscon in mind could nick my dads lol

Yes, it is in most cases.

Alfalfa is a good acid buffer- could you give him a small feed of Alfa A when he's in if he's not eating his hay?

Or you can give them antacids- the chalky tablets are fine and can be fed like a treat. You might need to give him a handful though, depending on how big he is!

I think you can also give them ranitidine, but I'm not sure on the dosage on that.

Please don't paint nasty stuff everywhere. You can hardly blame him if he has heartburn!

I just don't buy in to all these awful things to do to stop a cribber. If its stress down to a move can't you give him time to settle? I was once thinking of getting a cribber and i never entertained the thought of painting this and putting metal on that. I don't know why but it seems torturous to stop an animal doing something that it can't help.
 
I paint undiluted washing-up liquid on the wooded edges around my stables. Works pretty well. Might be worth a try before spending any money on shop products.
