Oh I’ve thought of another one. Annoying but I kind of understand why it started and that it’s a hang up from then… tho wish he wouldn’t.
Tying up outside his stable….
Never had an issue previously. Could tie him up anywhere. At our last yard it was grass livery and often he’d be tied up on the yard whilst we faffed/chatted or whatever and he’d stand there and quietly snooze, no bother.
When he was on extended box rest for a ligament injury I started tying him up outside his stable whilst I was mucking out. It had never been an issue before. He was bored and didn’t want to be in so started making his opinions known. He’d intentionally knock over wheelbarrows given the chance, kick the door or his grooming box etc- anything to get your attention (and ideally then go on his twice daily in hand walks…) The fuss he would make to go on his walks you’d think he would be a fire breathing dragon to walk out but as soon as you started he was as good as gold. He just hated box rest, and really looked forward to a change of scene. I gave up tying him up when a stable came free and would pop him in the empty one whilst I mucked out.
Unfortunately that has carried on, even tho he’s not been on boxrest since last spring… if you tie him up outside HIS OWN stable and then walk to the tack room or whatever (so only leaving him for a minute or less), he starts kicking the front of his stable door/boxes outside his stable etc. Anything. He’s a real nuisance.
However, if you tie him up outside one of the other stables in the same row, so just a few meters away, he’ll stand perfectly quietly and politely. Doesn’t kick/paw/destroy stuff.
We now joke that we have to tie up in his ‘naughty corner’. Someone kindly brought him in for me a few weeks ago as we were going to ride together and I was running late. She is a fairly new livery who hadn’t been there when he was boxrested. She didn’t realise why I normally tie up elsewhere if I’m going to tack up straight away (and I’d forgotten to tell her as it’s just habit now)… she left him outside his stable whilst picking her horses feet out, a few doors down… before she could stop him he kicked his grooming box and smashed the lid. He’s fine if you’re right there with him, but you can’t leave him to grab tack/hat etc.
