what rug to travel in?

my horse is travelling home from my uni on wednesday, setting off at lunch time, should take about 7 hours..
im not sure how to rug him up for the journey - hes clipped out apart from legs (TB xID).
atm hes wearing a 300 fill stable rug with hood during the day in stable and with a thin stable rug underneath this at night.
he tends to keep warm fairly easily.
The rugs i have are the 300 fill stable rug with hood, a medium stable rug and thin one. also a thin sweat rug.
not sure what to put on him for journey? - travelling in a lorry possibly with 1 other horse.. what would u put on him? thanks guys (hes being transported by a company so its not like i can nip in and change rugs ect)

agree with this, and if he's travelling with another horse, then its likely to be hot in the lorry. my IDxTB (also keeps warm easily with same clip) got very sweaty with a LW on with another horse in the lorry last week, so just stick to the LW/MW. But you'll know him, so you'll be able to judge it

i suppose if he gets too hot/cold they would change rugs?
never had a horse transported before...i was thinking his medium rug, unless its really mild and i wud put lightweight on. wud much prefer too cold than hot as well
 

To be honest I would just put a cooler/fleece on him. They can get quite hot travelling (though it depends on the lorry and th individual horse).

I have never travelled in anything more than a fleece - even in January.

Nope, they most likely won't change rugs. I'd stick the lightweight on him to be honest.
 
Id be inclined to go as light as you can tbh, even in the winter.

Horse boxes tend to get warm and ive seen so many horses arrive at their destinations absolutly dripping and in quite a state.

How thin is your sweat rug? Id never consider travelling in anything heavier than a thermatex really.
 
Id rather go for the lightweight stable rug. Horses get pretty warm travelling IMO and you say he generally is quite a warm horse.

I wouldn't travel my horses far in anything other than a fleece or thermatex. I do put MW stable rugs on if travelling locally though, but then we have a trailer so its rather colder than a lorry!

Definitely lightweight. I have a TB who is fully clipped out apart from his legs and I travel him in a fleece. Especially if there is more than one horse on the lorry, it does get hot in there!
 
My horse is the same breed and clipped exactly the same. He is also rugged the same - HW Full neck in the day & has a LW stable underneath at night.

I have been travelling him in a LW stable rug. I took him for a 3hr trip at the weekend and it was really cold. He was neither too hot or too cold at the end of the journey.
 
It depends so much on the horse - OH's mare travels in a thin fleece cooler, never anything more! Whereas my lad will travel in his HW stable rug in the winter on a frosty morning as he gets cold easily - they'll come off the same lorry and Millie will be toasty warm and J only just warm enough!
 
I'm travelling my horse home from uni (3hrs) tomorrow. He's full clipped but we always travel him naked because he gets very warm travelling. If it was one of my others I would use a thin fleece or thermatex.
